Confined animal farming damages health and social harmony - 29 Jan 2010

When a factory farm of 5,800 pigs moved into her Canadian town, Ms. Joanne Dion Richilieu and her neighbors almost immediately began suffering from the impact. In addition to new health problems and noxious odors that kept families trapped inside their homes, an exorbitant amount of liquid pig waste, known as slurry, was sprayed onto surrounding fields,releasing a bacteria and toxic gas-filled environmental hazard.

Joanne Dion Richilieu – Neighbor of pig factory farm (F): It gets to be a very acidic mixture that smells of sulfuric gases and all kinds of stuff. As soon as it rains, it all ends up in rivers. At every rain, the river here changes colors. I’ve measured the coliforms (fecal bacteria) in the water after a rain, and the river is not swimmable anymore.

VOICE: Unlike industrial factories, animal farms in many countries are exempted from environmental laws that curb pollution. Ms. Richilieu tried to form a citizens group and appealed to legislators and the media in an attempt to stop new farms from moving in, but was thwarted by the large economic and political interests of the company that owned the factory farm.

Joanne Dion Richilieu (F): Some old friends are now enemies because of that. It’s caused conflicts and not only environmental problems, but social problems. Just talking about it is very hard for me. It’s too revolting to have this done to us, and I know I’m not the only one.

VOICE: Across Canada and indeed North America and other parts of the world, pig factory farms are also disrupting individuals and communities in similar ways – while at the same time being paid for by the citizens themselves.

Joanne Dion Richilieu (F): Even though the pig economy is very bad, it is a very subsidized industry. So there’s a lot of citizens’ money going into this polluting industry.

VOICE: Pig factory farms are also central to the cause of another heavy social toll – the swine flu pandemic. As of today, the virus continues to take lives, with recently announced death tolls in places like India rising to 1,206 and Egypt with 248, while Cyprus, Romania, and the United States also have reported
new swine flu deaths.

Although there are many times more cases, including fatal ones, than have been counted, the most recent global calculations find the death toll to exceed 28,510.

Our appreciation and support, Ms. Richilieu and all other courageous individuals who are striving to regain a quality of life in their factory farm-affected communities.

Further mistreatment and violations revealed in the livestock industry - 31 Jan 2010

In the United States, organic family farm advocacy group Cornucopia Institute found that dairy farms throughout the nation, some with herds of up to 10,000 cows in crowded, windowless warehouse spaces, have distorted the terms of the Department of Agriculture’s Organic label.

For instance, whereas organic regulations require adequate grazing pasture to be made available, cows in these facilities were being given access to a tiny grassless strip with some hay spread over it.

In addition, a rule allowing mothers and newborn calves to stay indoors for a period was distorted in practice by forcing them to stay indoors 24 hours a day most of the year.

Elsewhere, in a presentation this past week to British Parliament members, animal welfare activist Tracy Worcester presented findings that more than a million tons of pig meat are being brought into the United Kingdom annually that have been raised using outlawed methods such as the unnecessary severing of pigs’ tails.

In sum, many livestock practices violate animal welfare laws while causing untold suffering to animals and eventually to humans who raise and consume them. The H1N1 swine flu virus is one such tragic byproduct of foul, disease-breeding confinement conditions, and is at the root of the tens of thousands of fatalities officially estimated.

Although experts note that actual fatalities and cases are far too high to count, in Europe, the countries of Austria, Lithuania, France and Slovakia continue to note increased swine flu incidence, while continuously added deaths have brought reported tolls to 253 in Egypt and 1,210 in India.

Meanwhile, China reported 21 new fatalities among 1,074 cases tallied in a recent one-week period. Our sympathies for all families afflicted by the animal-borne swine flu pandemic. May this grievous effect be soon eliminated as people realize the manifold benefits of foregoing all animal-raising practices in favor of the humane organic vegan diet.

Horse meat at risk of tainting with drug residues - 2 Feb 2010

A new European Union food safety law requires detailed medical histories for all imported horse meat from countries such as the US and Canada. Banned substances include certain antibiotics, all growth hormones and especially phenylbutazone, a pain medicine that has been known to cause cancer in humans.

Despite such known and unknown risks to human health, similar substances are all too commonly administered to other farmed animals throughout the world. In the case of cows, pigs, chickens and turkeys, for example, antibiotics and growth hormones are used systematically to promote unnaturally rapid weight gain as well as curb rampant infections created by the overcrowded and utterly filthy conditions.

Such practices in the meat industry have resulted in the spawning of new pathogens, including the H1N1 pandemic swine flu virus. In a swine flu update, death tolls have increased in recent days to 119 in Romania, 57 in Âu Lạc (Vietnam), 258 in Egypt, and 1,235in India. Even in countries with high levels of testing to diagnose the virus, experts say that there are numerous cases and deaths that are never recorded.

We sorrow for the victims and the families of swine flu and other impacts related to the meat industry.
Our prayers for the soon end of the suffering and worry as more and more people turn to the wholesome and humane organic vegan fare.

Factory farms wreak social and economic havoc. - 4 Feb 2010

Increasingly, as awareness grows about the health and environmental detriments of intensive animal farming, communities across the globe have organized in efforts to prevent new ones from being built.

Health hazards include links between industrialized pork production and increased rates of respiratory illness,as well as potentially lethal antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections.

In addition, runoff from livestock’s unregulated toxic waste is contaminating rivers, water supplies and entire ecosystems. Mr. Glen Koroluk of the advocacy organization Beyond Factory Farming has joined citizens in the province of Manitoba, Canada in support of their concerned endeavors.

With a factory farm operation containing some 12,000-24,000 pigs at any one time, communities find themselves divided between those fearing for their health and those invested in the profits.

However, while the human toll mounts, the expected economic gains often go unrealized, as Mr. Koroluk explained.

Glen Koroluk (M): There’s big promises made that these barns would just revitalize a region and a community, and bring in all these jobs, and save your school, etc. That hasn’t happened.

What we’ve seen here in Manitoba, for instance,a lot of the feed grain is imported, a lot of it is cheap corn coming from the US, so there wasn’t that big benefit to local farmers’ growing feed. And the job predictions: You don’t need a lot of people to take care of a few barns; it’s all automated; it’s all mechanized.

What a person mostly does is go inside and grabs all the dead pigs and throws them in the bin.

Supreme Master TV correspondent (F): The dead pigs?

Glen Koroluk (M): Well, yes, there’s a 10-15% mortality rate in hog barns because of the confined way they live. So the jobs didn’t materialize and communities didn’t grow and prosper, and in fact, it was an extraction of resources from communities. So instead of providing benefits, they extracted wealth from communities, and so that’s the model that stuck.

VOICE: The H1N1 swine flu virus is yet another byproduct of the crowding and filth associated with confined animal slaughter operations. The long-drawn spread of this illness worldwide is still not over, as infections and fatalities continue to rise, despite the majority of cases going unreported.

Egypt and India are among the few countries still announcing new deaths daily, with updated fatalities of 260 in Egypt and 1,238 in India. Health officials, meanwhile, are recommending vaccination to defend from an anticipated wave in the coming weeks.

However, recent and alarming cases of side effects include 17 Canadians who were sickened by the vaccine, with 4 who were diagnosed with the paralyzing Guillain-Barré syndrome while the remaining 13 were afflicted by a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis.

Recently also, a British woman was diagnosed with a condition induced by the vaccine known as myasthenia gravis, which triggers paralysis and extreme pain in the face and legs.

It saddens us to know of the complications and tragedies that such animal-borne pandemics as the swine flu inflict in people’s lives. We thank Mr. Koroluk, Beyond Factory Farming and all individuals for their efforts to avert the social and economic costs of such animal raising practices, as we pray that through new vegan choices, all societies may thrivein real safety and health.

More deadly bird flu outbreaks. - 5 Feb 2010

At least 1,176 poultry chickens in multiple villages in Indonesia have perished from the avian flu virus in January 2010 alone, a marked increase from 708 chicken deaths in all of 2009.

Elsewhere, bird flu among farmed chickens has been reported in Âu Lạc (Vietnam), Bangladesh, Israel, and India, with up to thousands of birds killed in an attempt to contain the disease.

In human cases, an Indonesian 3-year-old and an infant are among the most recent to have been afflicted, with infections that are caused by direct contact with infected birds or consumption of contaminated meat.

Meanwhile, the swine flu, which is another active animal-borne disease, continues to spread. Fatalities are still rising in various countries, although actual death tolls worldwide are too high to be realistically counted.

China has reported 775 deaths, with India recording 1,259, while Hungary announced that 112 people have perished as people seeking medical care for flu-like symptoms have been increasing over the past two weeks.

We sympathize for the countless victims of swine flu, bird flu, and other livestock-related diseases. Let us work to prevent the risk of further outbreaks as well as new viruses by stopping the mass confinement of animals and adopting the humane, health-promoting organic vegan diet.

Experts warn pandemic not over, especially for children - 8 Feb 2010

Initial reports in the Eurosurveillance journal revealed that the H1N1 swine flu virus increased the death toll among European children between ages 5 and 14 in the last months of 2009, more than what would normally be expected at that time. Likewise, in the US, swine flu has killed over 300 children, which is more than double
the number of fatalities from regular seasonal flu, reflecting the H1N1's high mortality rate for the young.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also raised the country's death toll to an estimated 11,000. CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden stated, “The estimates are actually much more accurate than the confirmed numbers.

The number of confirmed deaths is really just a small proportion of the number of total deaths.” The same under-reporting of actual cases is also true on a global scale.

Meanwhile, in Australia, epidemic experts predict that a second wave of swine flu may strike as early as the end of February, and that infections could even be accelerated as Australian children return from the holidays in the northern hemisphere, where a wave more recently had peaked.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 209 countries continue to report swine flu activity, and since last week, 463 people worldwide perished due to the pandemic.

As Dr. Anne Schuchat, Director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases stated, “Many people believe the outbreak is over (but) I think it is too soon for us to have that complacency.

This pandemic isn't over yet.” We sympathize with individuals and families afflicted by the swine flu pandemic, which has arisen due to the foul and inhumane conditions of animal raising that breed such viruses.

Anthrax reappears in Sweden after nearly three decades - 10 Feb 2010

The dangerous bacteria was discovered in a herd of 90 cattle following a 27-years period during which no cases were detected. So far, 7 cows have died since the initial diagnosis.

Feed mixed with contaminated soil and dust was the suspected source of the pathogen, with the spores themselves originating as far back as 100 years ago, when dead animals were dumped into a regional river during anthrax outbreaks.

Surviving through the decades, the spores become active when coming in contact with a host through inhalation or touch, or by eating the meat of an infected animal. Anthrax is just one of many contagious diseases that have proliferated from livestock raising, and affects both animals and humans.

Another, in the form of a virus, is the H1N1 swine flu, which continues to spread across the globe. Besides sickening pigs, turkeys and other species in at least 20 countries, severe infections and fatalities in humans continue, with Thailand just increasing her death toll to 201, Hong Kong to 66, and India to 1,270.

However, experts warn that the vast majority of cases, including those fatal, are far too numerous to count. We send our sympathies to the world’s people who have lost loved ones due to swine flu, anthrax, and other animal-related diseases.

Our thanks to the Swedish health authorities who are working to alert and safeguard the public from anthrax. May humanity quickly turn to the organic vegan diet as the most effective way to be free of such pathogens and protect countless lives.

Adverse social and health impacts of pig factory farm - 13 Feb 2010

For Ms. Johanne Dion and her neighbors in the once-picturesque town of Richelieu, Quebec, Canada, it wasn’t just the unbearable smell of the new “mega” pig farm; it was the devaluation of their homes, not to mention the debilitating bouts of illness with diarrhea and asthma. But for Ms. Dion, the most adverse impact of the 5,800-pig production facility was environmental. With each pig generating three times the waste of a human, the multi-million liters of liquid manure was used to fertilize the only crop that could withstand its toxicity, namely genetically modified corn, which in turn was used to feed the farmed pigs. But this noxious substance has also caused pollution, biodiversity loss and erosion, which turns the river brown and poisonous from the untreated runoff. Supreme Master Television’s correspondent tells us more about this example of intensive animal farming, which is now the source of nearly all meat sold in North America.

Correspondent (F): The amount of pigs that are produced in those factories, it’s very large.

So unfortunately, it’s not because the animals smell, but it’s because of the concentration of the animals, because of their waste, there’s a bad, bad smell produced by them. Especially when they spread the manure.

Johanne Dion (F): The farm is divided in two. There’s two barns here, and two barns here. This is the nursery, this is the fattening-up barn. Each installation has its own pit, two big concrete pits to hold the slurry [liquid feces], good for a whole year, or almost, they figure. Surrounding this installation is all the fields that are going to be sprayed with the slurry. As you can see, it’s not very far from the river. Don’t even think about drinking it. Forget it. It’s much too dangerous. Even touching it, you risk catching a bad bug, definitely. The coliform [fecal bacteria] count is so high. If you go down river this way, I’d say between 4 and 10 kilometers away, is the watering tank for our town water. So we drink, in my town here, water from the Richelieu River that comes down river from this pig farm. Isn’t that lovely.

Correspondent (F): When people buy meat at the store, it’s bad for everybody: it’s bad for our health, it’s bad for the environment, and it’s bad for the animals. They have to suffer a lot because of that way of production.

Johanne Dion (F): Just the thought of an animal not seeing the sun for all its life, just to feed us, to be able to sell us a cheap roast pork, it’s inhumane! We pay very dearly for cheap pork in the supermarkets – with our health, with the environment…

VOICE: Another outcome of the conditions of industrial pig production is the breeding of new pathogens such as that the deadly swine flu virus. This pandemic continues its silent spread around the globe, with new cases officially recorded in countries as distant to each other as Senegal, Romania, Egypt, United States and Turkey, which just announced an estimated 600 swine flu deaths. However, the actual human toll worldwide is too high to confirm.

We sorrow for the victims of animal farming practices that have led to such physical and emotional suffering through disease and environmental ruin. May we end all these needless risks by choosing the safe, organic vegan way of life.

Factory farm waste: a spreading cause of environmental demise - 19 Feb 2010

The eastern state of North Carolina, USA has the highest concentration of pigs raised for meat in all of North America. According to one study, the 10 million confined animals generate more fecal waste daily than the human populations of North Carolina, North Dakota, New Hampshire, California, New York, Texas, and Pennsylvania – combined.

The waste matter is dumped into large multi-acre open pits, which are often colored pink due to the chemically treated feed, with a portion that is also sprayed on crops as fertilizer. However, following rains, much of this nitrate- and bacteria-filled waste runs off into the coastal plain’s river system – with damaging effects on the ecosystem and residents’ well-being.

Supreme Master Television spoke with North America-based Waterkeeper Alliance spokesperson Mr. Rick Dove, who has been documenting pollution from the region’s animal factory farms for more than 15 years.

Rick Dove, North Carolina, Southeastern representative for Waterkeeper Alliance (M):

On some of our rivers like the Neuse, we’ve lost over a billion dead fish since 1991, and just this year we’ve lost about two hundred million on the Neuse River. So, we’re dealing with dead fish, we’re dealing with people in the communities who are complaining of the noxious gases. You can’t get away from being in the middle of hog farms and lagoons and spray pits; they’re everywhere. These people literally cry when you talk to them.

VOICE: Mr. Dove believes such harms of industrial-scale farming will persist as long as such inhumane facilities exist.

Rick Dove (M): Just because we say it’s okay under man’s law to do something, like have all the pig farms in one place, it really isn’t okay with nature’s laws, and when those laws are broken there’s consequences, and they can be serious, very, very serious.

VOICE: To date, fatalities from the 2009 swine flu pandemic continue to rise across the globe, including 1,321 deaths now in India; 31 in Georgia; 70 in Hong Kong; 90 in Israel and 206 in Thailand. Estimated death tolls, such as the recently updated 11,690 swine flu-related losses in the United States, are believed by experts to be closer to reality than official counts, as actual cases are considered too innumerable to track.

Meanwhile, the South African Health Ministry has expressed fears of a swine flu pandemic flare-up during the coming winter months when the World Cup football tournament is anticipating a crowd of 400,000 international spectators. South African Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi stated that such an outbreak would be one of the agency’s “biggest nightmares.”

Pig factory farm threatens health for generations - 24 Feb 2010

Those who have experienced the construction of industrial-scale animal farms near their homes share a grave set of health, environmental, and social detriments. For Ms. Johanne Dion and others in a Quebec, Canada community, much of their lives have become consumed with defending themselves and fellow citizens from the harmful effects of the farm’s pollution.

(Interview in English)

Johanne Dion – Pig factory farm neighbor, Quebec, Canada (F): I was hoping I could get this river cleaned up before I died, I was hoping. (sobbing) Until I heard about the pig farm. And when I heard about the pig farm, I said, “No way! It’s impossible, they won’t let it happen. They can’t do that.” And they did.

VOICE: The pig factory farm that was installed in 2006 contained 5,800 pigs, nearly double the town’s human population. The untreated waste pouring from the barns was so massive that the river often turned brown for days and was restricted from swimming.

Johanne Dion (F): (still crying) We did a lot about municipal and industrial pollution, but agricultural pollution is very bad, and it’s getting worse.

VOICE: The toxic substances emitted by the concentrated pig barns into the surrounding waterways include antibiotics, artificial hormones, pesticides, and even deadly pathogens. Ms. Dion and her husband Mr. Tim Yeatman formed a group that attempted to protect public health by shutting down the operation, and in the process they learned to test for bacteria in the water. He explained the results from testing one farm neighbor's well.

Tim Yeatman – former computer firm employee (M): We did test his well and we did determine that they had not just coliform in their well, they had E. coli in their well. E. coli is what can kill you.

VOICE: Another afflicted neighbor, who asked to be anonymous, described how his family had been affected by the unbearably suffocating stench exuded by the rotting carcasses and feces.

Pig factory farm neighbor (M): We cannot breathe. It’s the ammonia. We lack air. There have been days when we had to leave. We leave in the morning, we return in the evening when the winds have changed direction.

VOICE: Another impact of pig factory farms is evident in the worldwide swine flu pandemic, which originated in their filthy and intensive confinement conditions. The virus continues to severely sicken and cause deaths in children and younger adults more than older persons. With only some countries keeping records, fatalities most recently rose to 209 in Thailand, 1,337 in India, 32 in Oman, and at least 100 in the Czech Republic. However, experts say that these are only a fraction of actual cases.

Our appreciation for the brave voices of the Canadian residents as we share in grief and sorrow with all who have been directly and indirectly affected by these inhumane animal farming practices. Let us minimize these tragic effects as we opt instead for the wholesome and vital organic vegan lifestyle.

Khuẩn cúm heo gây lây nhiễm chết nguời hơn - 31 tháng 10, 2009

Một toán nghiên cứu ở Ấn Độ phát hiện rằng mặc dù số tử vong cúm heo trước kia chủ yếu phát sinh từ sự lây nhiễm khuẩn không quan trọng của phổi, những cái chết từ cuối tháng 8 là do lây nhiễm khuẩn độc hại hơn trong đó một chất đạm được đặt vào trên lớp màng của phổi, ngăn chận mọi dưỡng khí đi vào thân thể. Điều này có thể cho thấy rằng khuẩn cúm heo đã biến thái.

Thực phẩm từ thực vật có thể ngăn ngừa cúm bằng cách bảo tồn sức khỏe của phổi - 2 tháng 11, 2009

Mặc dù nhiều ca cúm heo tương đối nhẹ đối với một số người, chứng bệnh này nghiêm trọng và gây chết người. Các nhà nghiên cứu phát hiện rằng điển hình những người mất mạng vì cúm là đã đối diện các biến chứng hô hấp và khó hấp thụ dưỡng khí. Phương cách đơn giản để giúp ngăn chận cúm heo - 4 tháng 11, 2009

Với 1 phần 3 dân số thế giới được dự kiến sẽ lây nhiễm khuẩn cúm heo, Cơ quan Kiểm tra Kỹ thuật ở Đức (TUV) đã khuyến khích người dân uống ít nhất 2 lít nước mỗi ngày để tăng cường hệ miễn nhiễm.

TUV còn đưa ra ý kiến là lối dinh dưỡng dồi dào sinh tố và khoáng chất và đi bộ nhiều để gia tăng lưu lượng. Mặc y phục ấm và tắm nước ấm cũng có thể gia tăng lưu lượng và xây dựng khả năng miễn nhiễm. Lưu ý cơ bản trong việc duy trì vệ sinh tốt qua các phương cách như rửa tay thường xuyên cũng được khuyến khích.

Trong khi đó, cúm heo đã lan tràn nhanh chóng khắp Ukraine, với 67 tử vong được báo cáo cho đến nay liên quan đến các vấn đề hô hấp nghiêm trọng. Quốc gia đã khẩn cấp yêu cầu thuốc men và dụng cụ y khoa cho việc điều trị, khi nói rằng 8.000 người cần được đưa vào bệnh viện hay điều trị tại bệnh viện. Thêm nữa, chính phủ ra lệnh đóng cửa trường học và rạp chiếu phim trong 3 tuần để ngăn chận sự lây nhiễm của chứng bệnh.

Các quốc gia khác có tường trình về tử vong, từ em bé đến người già, bao gồm Syria, Ai Cập, Trung quốc, Kuwait, Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ, A Phú Hãn, Thụy Điển, Ý, Anh quốc và Jordan. Cúm heo gia tăng cảnh báo trong nhiều vùng - 6 tháng 11, 2009

Các viên chức y tế ở Ukraine đã tuyên bố số tử vong gia tăng cao hơn 90 người trong các tuần lễ vừa qua trong đó một số người nói rằng đó có thể là kết quả của một biến thái của cúm heo. Chính phủ yêu cầu cộng đồng quốc tế trợ giúp trong sự thiếu hụt tiếp liệu cơ bản và dụng cụ y khoa. Azerbaijan đang gửi 20 tấn trợ cấp nhân đạo, trong khi các quốc gia lân cận như Ba Lan, Hung Gia Lợi và Romania chuẩn bị cho khả năng phát tán của khuẩn đến quốc gia họ.

Trong khi đó, với số ca cúm heo lan truyền nhanh chóng ở Nam Hàn và 45 người mất mạng, các viên chức đã tuyên bố mức độ cao nhất cảnh báo đỏ, từ đó cho phép các viên chức hạn chế việc du hành và hủy bỏ các sinh hoạt công cộng nhanh hơn trong khi vận động để chống cúm.

Cúm heo hiện nay là vi khuẩn cúm hàng đầu trên thế giới - 8 tháng 11, 2009

Tổ chức Y tế Quốc tế (WHO) tuyên bố rằng vi khuẩn cúm heo H1N1 hiện nay là vi khuẩn cúm thông thường nhất trong loài người. Tuy nhiên, không giống như cúm mùa, mức độ hoạt động của cúm heo không chỉ cao vào mùa đông mà cũng vào những tháng hè, với con người trẻ hơn 65 tuổi đặc biệt dễ bị nhiễm.

Mặc dù các ca cúm heo trên quốc tế có quá nhiều để đếm chính xác, có chiều hướng đáng lo ngại là các ca cúm heo tăng gia ở Bắc Mỹ, Âu châu, và vài phần ở Á châu. Cộng đồng bị dịch MRSA đang tăng gia về số tử vong - 10 tháng 11 , 2009

Những nhà nghiên cứu tại Đại học Loyola ở Illinois, Hoa Kỳ khám phá một sự xuất hiện đang lên của vi khuẩn kháng methicillin tên là Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) trên khắp quốc gia, nhất là trong những tháng mùa hạ vừa qua.

Dược lý gia Tiến sĩ Carol Moore giải thích rằng MRSA đi vào cơ thể qua da, và số ca gia tăng vào mùa hạ có thể được giải thích bởi lý do là con người mặc ít quần áo bảo vệ hơn.

Cộng đồng bị nạn dịch MRSA, gây ra những vết lở loét đau đớn và gây tử vong cho khoảng 10% số người bị nhiễm, được liên kết với nông trại chăn nuôi thú. Gần đây nhất, nghiên cứu Hoa Kỳ tìm thấy chuỗi vi khuẩn mới MRSA 5 lần dễ chết người hơn là những chuỗi khác được biết đến, giết 50% nạn nhân trong vòng 30 ngày. Chuỗi vi khuẩn này cũng kháng lại mạnh mẽ hơn đối với một trụ sinh hiệu lực mà đã từng hữu hiệu chữa trị MRSA. Trong khi đó, bệnh cúm heo truyền từ thú vật sang người tiếp tục gây họa khắp toàn cầu.

Những ca cúm heo đã từ lâu được nói rằng lên tới hàng triệu tại các quốc gia như là Hoa Kỳ, mặc dù tổng số toàn cầu quá cao để được biết rõ. Trung tâm Kiểm soát và Phòng ngừa Bệnh ở Âu Châu tuyên bố tổng số tử vong chính thức lên đến 6.349 ca. Tại Âu Châu, 37 người chết được tường trình nội 24 giờ đồng hồ qua, và ở Ukraine, trong vòng vài tuần rồi đã thấy bộc phát tăng cao rất nhanh, đem số tử vong lên tới 155.

Nhiều quốc gia báo cáo về những tử vong mới vì cúm heo, với số đếm ghi nhận gần đây tăng lên 2 người ở Palestine, 6 ở Bangladesh, 24 ở Kuwait, 27 ở Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ, 39 ở Âu Lạc (Việt Nam), 48 ở Nam Hàn, và 502 ở Ấn Độ.

80.000 tử vong vì cúm heo được tiên đoán ở Âu Châu - 12 tháng 11 , 2009

Theo lời Trung tâm Âu Châu về Phòng ngừa và Kiểm soát Bệnh tật (ECDC), số tử vong chính thức vì cúm heo hiện thời là 6.592, một con số được định giá hoàn toàn thấp, vì có mâu thuẫn rộng lớn trong việc tiếp cận y tế và cơ sở thử nghiệm giữa các quốc gia khác nhau.

ECDC đã từ lâu ngừng đếm tổng số người nhiễm bệnh cúm heo cũng vì cùng lý do đó. Hơn nữa, các viên chức từ cơ quan này tuyên bố rằng có nhiều tới 40.000 người riêng tại Âu Châu có thể chết vì cúm heo trong mùa đông này, với thêm 40.000 tử vong nữa từ những sóng cúm mùa theo sau đó. Khi đó, con số người bị nhiễm cúm heo ở Ukraine bùng phát hầu như qua đêm, lên đến 1,3 triệu người nội trong vài tuần.

Những viên chức y tế quốc tế đang định giá cuộc bộc phát này để xem có phải vi khuẩn là một chuỗi vi khuẩn mới, độc hại hơn không, hoặc một thể loại cúm khác. Trong khi đó, những tử vong tại Ukraine leo thang lên đến 213 với gần 53.000 người phải nhập bệnh viện. Thiếu niên Hoa Kỳ nhập viện vì rối loạn thần kinh sau khi chích ngừa cúm heo.

Jordan McFarland, lực sĩ trẻ 14 tuổi từ tiểu bang Virginia, Hoa Kỳ phát sinh đau đầu khủng khiếp, bắp thịt co giật, và chân bị yếu, theo sau việc chích thuốc ngừa cúm heo. Sau khi nhập viện, em được chẩn đoán với triệu chứng Guillain-Barré. Theo lời Các Trung tâm Kiểm soát và Phòng ngừa Bệnh tật Hoa Kỳ, chứng rối loạn tâm thần hiếm có này là giống như một triệu chứng đã hiển lộ vào năm 1976 ở Hoa Kỳ với chương trình chích thuốc ngừa cúm heo, dẫn đến một số tử vong và gây ảnh hưởng suy nhược thần kinh như là bại liệt cho những ai sống sót.

Tuần này, rất nhiều trẻ em tại Nữu Ước, Hoa Kỳ được điều trị ở bệnh viện sau khi phát sinh nhức đầu và buồn nôn theo sau việc chích ngừa cúm heo, nhưng sau đó xuất viện. Trên toàn cầu, cúm heo lan tràn quá nhanh qua bao nhiêu tháng nay không đếm xuể. Tuy nhiên, khi số tử vong vì cúm heo tại Âu Châu tăng gấp đôi hầu như mỗi tuần trong tháng vừa qua, từ 12 đến 24 rồi đến trên 40, và giờ là hơn 80 tử vong mỗi tuần, thì viên chức thuộc Trung tâm Âu Châu Kiểm soát và Phòng ngừa Bệnh tật (ECDC) tuyên bố rằng: “Chúng ta đang bước vào giai đoạn cúm gia tốc trên toàn cầu.”

Số lượng tử vong tiếp tục lan tràn trên toàn cầu, với Ấn Độ xác nhận 514 người chết, 45 được báo cáo ở Do Thái, 239 người chết ở Ukraine, 58 ở Ba Tư, 36 ở Trung Hoa, 16 ở Nga sô, 40 ở Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ, và 40 ở Âu Lạc (Việt Nam), là giữa các quốc gia khác. Đáng lo ngại là ở Hoa Kỳ, nơi đó số tử vong được ước lượng khoảng 1.000, mà một tin mới nhất cho rằng con số tử vong sẽ là hơn 4.000 và có thể lên cao tới 6.000. Nỗ lực chủng ngừa khắp toàn cầu được ghi nhận bởi nhiều trường hợp có phản ứng tai hại đối với thuốc chủng, khi nhiều người vẫn không thấy an toàn do thiếu thử nghiệm, hóa chất được coi là chất độc, và sự kiện là thuốc chủng tiêu biểu được chế tạo dùng trứng sản xuất hàng loạt từ việc đối xử vô nhân đạo đối với gà.

Thêm nữa, một số lượng nhân viên không được biết tại bệnh viện Biên giới Dịch vụ Y t,ế Quốc gia (NHS) ở Tô Cách Lan Anh quốc gặp phản ứng tai hại sau khi được chủng ngừa cúm thường trong mùa và cúm heo đồng thời. Và ở Trung quốc, ít nhất 15 người có phản ứng khủng hoảng nghiêm trọng đối với thuốc chủng.

Số tử vong chính thức trên toàn cầu được báo cáo là 6.768. Tổng số thật sự của cả số tử vong cúm heo và số ca cúm heo được coi là quá nhiều để kiểm tính chính xác. Ontario,Gia Nã Đại chứng kiến một gia tăng khổng lồ số lượng tử vong cúm heo, với 24 người qua đời chưa đầy 72 giờ, gia tăng số tử vong của quốc gia lên 61. Bộ Y tế của Ukraine tuyên bố 265 tử vong cúm heo, khi Ba Lan, và Bắc Cyprus và Kosovo, mỗi quốc gia đều tường trình ca tử vong đầu tiên vì cúm heo của họ. Hiện nay Trung quốc đã ghi nhận 43 tử vong, Hung Gia Lợi và Phần Lan, đều có 7 tử vong, El Salvador 25, Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ 60, và Tân Tây Lan 20, trong số các quốc gia khác.

Xin chia buồn cùng người bị mất người thân vì chứng bệnh vi khuẩn tàn nhẫn này, và cầu nguyện cho bệnh nhân hay người bị tác dụng phụ của thuốc chủng. Mong tất cả chúng ta trở lại lối ăn hài hòa có thể ngăn ngừa các bệnh sinh ra từ thú vật và bảo vệ sức khỏe công cộng.

Cost of swine flu continues to mount, extending to further human and financial toll - 29 May 2010

David Kirby – US bestselling investigative journalist (M): The transportation of the animals, which is not only a horrible animal welfare issue -- sometime these animals are 10, 12, 24 hours at a time on these trucks night and day, in cold and hot weather; they can’t sit down, they can’t sleep, they’re going to the bathroom on themselves; it’s completely inhumane -- but they are also shedding virus and bacteria.

If you’ve ever driven behind a chicken truck, you’ve seen the dust and feathers and fecal, and everything, just, I mean it’s like it’s snowing sometimes, there’s so much stuff coming at you. I know scientists in Maryland who go out and follow the chicken trucks and catch some of that air, and sure enough they’re finding multi-drug resistant bacteria. A lot of modern-day diseases originated, at least in part, in factory farms.

VOICE: Regarding the deadly 2009 swine flu pandemic, which continues to claim lives young and old globally, Mr. Kirby confirmed its origin in a novel virus that emerged on one US pig factory farm in 1998 and spread nationwide within a week.

David Kirby (M): It turns out, six of the eight viral components in the current novel H1N1 virus are traced back to that hog farm in North Carolina.

When I talk about the hidden cost of food, you have to take into account something like swine flu, which cost the world billions and billions and billions of dollars, and thousands and thousands of lives, and all kinds of disruption, and buying a vaccine that nobody wanted.

And if you add up those billions of dollars and divide it by three hundred million, every single American and citizen of the world were paying for those pork chops from 1998. We’re paying the bill, still, and we’ll be paying it for a long time.
