Reading I (Ez 18:18-25)

Thus says the LORD: You say, “The LORD’s way is not fair!” Hear now, house of Israel: Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair? When someone virtuous turns away from virtue to commit iniquity, and dies, it is because of the iniquity he committed that he must die. But if he turns from the wickedness he has committed, he does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life; since he has turned away from all the sins that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

Reading II (Phil 2:1-11)

Brothers and sisters: If there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing. Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also for those of others.

Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus, Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Gospel (Mt 21:28-32)

Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people: “What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’ He said in reply, ‘I will not,’ but afterwards changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, ‘Yes, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did his father’s will?” They answered, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him.”

Bài Đọc 2 (Pl 2:1-11)

Anh em thân mến, nếu có sự an ủi nào trong Đức Kitô, nếu có sự khích lệ nào trong đức mến, nếu có sự hiệp nhất nào trong Thánh Thần, nếu có lòng thương xót nào, thì anh em hãy làm cho tôi được trọn niềm hân hoan, để anh em hưởng cùng một niềm vui, được cùng chung một lòng mến, được đồng tâm nhất trí với nhau, chớ làm điều gì bởi ý cạnh tranh hay bởi tìm hư danh, nhưng hãy lấy lòng khiêm nhường mà coi kẻ khác vượt trổi hơn mình, mỗi người đừng chỉ nghĩ đến những sự thuộc về mình, nhưng hãy nghĩ đến những sự thuộc về kẻ khác. Anh em hãy cảm nghĩ trong anh em điều đã có trong Đức Giêsu Kitô.

Người tuy là thân phận Thiên Chúa, đã không nghĩ phải dành cho được ngang hàng với Thiên Chúa; trái lại, Người hủy bỏ chính mình mà nhận lấy thân phận tôi đòi, đã trở nên giống như loài người với cách thức bề ngoài như một người phàm. Người đã tự hạ mình mà vâng lời cho đến chết, và chết trên thập giá. Vì thế, Thiên Chúa đã tôn vinh Người, và ban cho Người một danh hiệu vượt trên mọi danh hiệu, để khi nghe tên Giêsu, mọi loài trên trời dưới đất và trong hỏa ngục phải quỳ gối xuống, và mọi miệng lưỡi phải tuyên xưng Đức Giêsu Kitô là Chúa, để Thiên Chúa Cha được vinh quang.

Phúc Âm (Mt 21:28-32)

Khi ấy, Chúa Giêsu phán cùng các thượng tế và các kỳ lão trong dân rằng: “Các ông nghĩ sao? Người kia có hai người con. Reflections

Reading I

We can either turn our lives toward God or away from God. The choice is ours to make. We must choose between a life of virtue or a life of sin. And God, in turn, will judge each one according to his or her choice. Some people complained to Ezekiel the prophet that this was not fair of God. But God turned the tables on them by saying that they were the ones who were unfair in trying to get out of their responsibility.

Have you ever heard someone say, “Why did God do this?” What does the reading from Ezekiel tell us that God might answer? What choice do we have? Will you look at your life to see what God is asking of you?

Reading II

The second reading is taken from what has been called Paul’s letter of joy. He is writing to the Christians of Philippi, whom he dearly loves. To be one in Christ with his friends is Paul’s great desire. What joy they will experience if they put on the attitude of Christ toward others and if they put aside all selfishness!

Paul writes that the Philippians can make his joy complete. How? He says they have given him encouragement. How? What virtues does he mention that could make our attitudes more Christ-like? Who encourages you? How?

Gospel

Jesus tells a parable to a group of religious leaders. He wants them to figure out which one of the sons did his father’s will. Was it the one who said “yes” but never showed up? Or was it the one who said “no” but later repented and carried out the father’s wishes. Sometimes people can deceive us by smooth talk. But God is never deceived. Like Jesus, our lives can be a “yes” to God the Father in word and deed.

Have you ever said “yes” to someone and then not done what you agreed to do? Did you ever say “no” to someone who asked you (like a parent or teacher) but then regretted it and changed your mind? Jesus is making it clear that sinners who repent are entering the kingdom before the priests and elders who did not repent and believe. What do you think of this?

Nothing is known of their lives except that they suffered martyrdom in Syria during the persecution of Diocletian.

A church erected on the site of their burial place was enlarged by the emperor Justinian. Devotion to the two saints spread rapidly in both East and West. A famous basilica was erected in their honor in Constantinople. Their names were placed in the canon of the Mass, probably in the sixth century.

Legend says that they were twin brothers born in Arabia, who became skilled doctors. They were among those who are venerated in the East as the “moneyless ones” because they did not charge a fee for their services. It was impossible that such prominent persons would escape unnoticed in time of persecution: They were arrested and beheaded.

Nine centuries later, Francis of Assisi (October 4) rebuilt the dilapidated San Damiano chapel outside Assisi.
