Phát quang rừng mưa Amazon tăng - 30 tháng 11, 2008

Tình trạng chặt phá rừng mưa Amazon gia tăng. Hôm thứ 6, chính phủ Ba Tây tuyên bố rằng tỷ lệ đốn chặt cây ở rừng Amazon đã tăng lên lần đầu tiên sau 4 năm. Từ tháng 8, 2007 đến tháng 7, 2008, 12.000 cây số vuông rừng (4.633 dặm vuông) tương ứng với hơn 4% diện tích lãnh thổ đã bị tàn phá so với cùng kỳ năm ngoái. Các vùng bị ảnh hưởng nặng nhất đã bị phát hoang chủ yếu là để trồng đậu nành nuôi nông súc lấy thịt. Cám ơn Ba Tây đã cập nhật báo động này. Cầu nguyện cho nỗ lực ngăn chặn được thực hiện cả trong nước và quốc tế nhằm phục hồi lá phổi quý báu này của địa cầu.

Cây cối cần thời gian mới có thể tạo ra sự quân bình mà chúng ta cần để sinh tồn.

Xói mòn đất : 35 triệu người bị ảnh hưởng ở phía bắc - 2 tháng 12, 2008

Do Thái giúp Nigeria khôi phục đất đai. Với 35 triệu người Nigeria ở các tiểu bang phía bắc của nước này đang ngày càng bị ảnh hưởng bởi điều kiện như sa mạc do khí hậu thay đổi và nạn phá rừng gây ra, chính phủ tuyên bố thực hiện một dự án hoa tiêu với tổ chức nông nghiệp Agridev có trụ sở tại Do Thái.

Chương trình “Sa Mạc đến Thực phẩm” sẽ giúp biến đất đai khô cằn ở 19 tiểu bang trong nước thành đất trồng trọt nhờ trồng cây gây rừng và nhiều biện pháp khác. Dự án này cũng nhằm mục đích trực tiếp và gián tiếp tạo trên 2 triệu việc làm. Xin khen ngợi Nigeria, Agridev và Do Thái đã hợp tác trong dự án “xanh” đáng làm này! Những nỗ lực hợp tác như của quý quốc chắc chắn sẽ giúp bảo đảm tương lai bền vững cho Nigeria và bầu sinh thái.

Các khu rừng có thể không chú ý vai trò điều chỉnh khí hậu - 3 tháng 12, 2008

Rừng cây cung cấp thêm đặc tính làm mát tinh cầu. Một nghiên cứu của các khoa học gia ở Đại học New Hampshire, Hoa Kỳ, phát hiện thấy khí ni-tơ dưới tàng lá cây giúp phản chiếu ánh sáng mặt trời trở lại không gian. Trong khi trước đây người ta biết tàng lá có nhiều khí ni-tơ giúp loại bỏ thán khí khỏi không khí, đặc tính giúp phản chiếu này của ni-tơ là điều mới mẻ. Vì vậy, cây xanh có lượng khí ni-tơ cao có thể hữu hiệu ít nhất là gấp hai lần trong việc giảm lượng thán khí trong không khí. Quả là khám phá thú vị, thưa các khoa học gia ở Đại học New Hampshire! Thật phấn khởi khi biết biết thêm về sự hữu ích cung cấp bởi rừng cây mang lại sự sống và cầu cho nhân loại quan tâm khôi phục sự cân bằng xanh tươi của bầu sinh thái.

Nạn phá rừng tại bờ biển Đại Tây Dương của Ba Tây tăng 793 mẫu Anh - 24 tháng 12, 2008

Nạn phá rừng ở bờ biển Đại Tây Dương tăng lên. Theo lời của Viện Nghiên cứu Vũ trụ và Tổ chức Lâm nghiệp Đại Tây Dương SOS ở nước này, trong vòng 3 năm qua, Ba Tây đã mất đi 793 héc-ta rừng cây ở Đại Tây Dương, một vùng rộng tương đương 990 sân túc cầu. Những con số mới nhất này có nghĩa là rừng cây ở Đại Tây Dương, được dùng để che phủ hầu hết bờ biển Đại Tây Dương của Ba Tây, hiện đang bị tàn phá tới 93%.

Cám ơn Viện Nghiên cứu Vũ trụ và Tổ chức Lâm nghiệp Đại Tây Dương SOS cho những khám phá quan trọng này. Mong ý thức được thức tỉnh giúp chúng ta chuyển sang cương vị quản gia tốt hơn đối với môi sinh và khôi phục sự cân bằng giữa con người và thiên nhiên.

Amazon could shrink by 85% due to climate change, scientists say - 14 Mar 2009

Climate change could claim 85% of the Amazon. As home to half the world’s plants, animals, and insects, the lush rainforest historically has been able to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide by two billion tons annually. However, British researchers from the Met Office Hadley Centre for Climate Change report that not only deforestation but now global warming itself is jeopardizing the health of the trees, saying that 85% of the forest could perish with an atmospheric temperature rise of four degrees Celsius. Findings from other scientists who attended the Copenhagen climate change conference last week concurred, including those of Dr. Carlos Nobres of Brazil’s Space Research Institute, also Chair of the International Geosphere Biosphere Program in Sweden.

Dr. Carlos Nobre – Brazil Space Research Institute, Chair, International Geosphere Biosphere Program in Stockholm, Sweden (M): Certainly, the most alarming climate change danger is the collapse of the Amazon forest. If the temperature rises 4 or 5 degrees, it’s very likely that the Amazon forest will collapse almost totally. So this is really the most alarming climate change danger that we are facing in South America.

VOICE: Also attending the conference was Professor Tim Lenton of the UK’s University of East Anglia, who stated: “Unless we can restrict the warming and seasonal changes we're already seeing in the tropics, the prospects for the Amazon aren't good.” A key to limiting this warming , according to Dr. Carlos Nobre, is to curb meat production, that is, to halt the clearing of the rainforests for cattle grazing.

Dr. Carlos Nobre (M): Worldwide, that’s very important because really, there will be lots of emissions if we think in the future of 9 billion people consuming meat; this is huge meat consumption which will lead to huge emissions. So, on the long range, we have to decrease meat consumption – and particularly for the global tropics. Specifically for the Amazon, deforestation comes about mostly to open up cattle ranches, so to produce meat.

Macedonians plant 5 million trees in one-day reforestation campaign - 18 Mar 2009

Macedonians plant 5 million trees in a day. To raise ecological awareness and help reforest the land, the country sponsored her third tree planting, this one called "Tree Day -- Plant Your Future." Joining the activity were statesmen such as Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski along with celebrities like renowned opera singer Boris Trajanov. Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Milososki commented on the nationwide endeavor, saying, “Tree Day is a uniting action, and investing in ecology is investing in our common future.”

Farmers reforest the Philippines - 8 Jul 2009

Over 33,000 growers recently received two hectares of deforested land each, with half to be planted in trees and the other half free for crop cultivation. The lands provided are located in elevated regions and in coastal mangrove areas.

As the initiative seeks to create over 52,000 jobs and restore millions of hectares of forest, Environment Secretary Joselito Atienza said, “Such opportunities will help give our upland families economic resiliency in dealing with the impact of the current global financial crisis while enabling them to take active part in fighting global warming.”

We join in lauding Your Excellency and the Philippines for this opportunity that helps the land, fellow citizens and the environment. May many more countries be inspired by your green example to similarly restore our precious Earth and her inhabitants.

Prince Charles contributes to Rainforest preservation - 1 Aug 2009

His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales has donated US$2.8 billion to preserve the tropical rain forests in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Congo, Costa Rica and Mexico. With a substantial portion going to Indonesia to address the severely impacted state of her forests, the country’s Minister of EnvironmentRachmat Witoelar affirmed, "In the next five years, we must plant two billion trees, or 400 million trees per year. Otherwise our forests will be history.”

India allocates fund for forest conservation - 5 Aug 2009

The nation’s environment minister has announced that the government will invest US$200 million in protecting its forests and will also report the amount of carbon emissions stored by the forest. With 65 million hectares or 20 percent of India's land covered by trees,the fund will be used to conserve and restore vegetation, control forest fires and strengthen forestry infrastructure.

Plans include extending to another 6 million hectares over the next 6 years. Kudos India for your planet-cooling investment to preserve the treasured lungs of Mother Earth. May the lush green forests flourish across yours and many other lands.

Ancient European forest suffers from climate change - 7 Aug 2009

Encompassing an area that includes parts of both Poland and Belarus, the 150,000 hectare Bialowieza Forest, Europe's last remaining ancient woodlands, has lost 50 centimeters in groundwater levels over the past 30 years and is seeing weakness in some shallow-rooted species like the majestic spruce.

The forest was designated as a United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site in 1979 and is home to rare mammals including 300 European Bison. Poland is currently considering forest expansion to further protect natural habitats.

Poland, we applaud your commitment to preserving this magnificent reserve. Let us all stem climate change worldwide by adopting the organic vegan, meaning animal-free, diet.

Supreme Master Ching Hai has long reminded of the significance of our actions, as during a September 1994 lecture in Singapore where she explained the benefits of a virtuous lifestyle for the welfare of the Earth.

Dairy industry adds to rainforest destruction - 25 Aug 2009

A report from Greenpeace Aotearoa New Zealand states that the dairy industry’s use of palm kernel expeller (PKE) as a feed supplement is destroying rainforests and increasing global warming.

PKE is a byproduct of milling palm oil from palm plantations, such as those in Southeast Asia, which are grown on land that was once rainforest.

The report also said that １.5 million hectares of rainforest would have been cleared just to produce the １.１ million tons needed by one country in 2008.

Immense amounts of greenhouse gases are released in the clearing process, not to mention the loss of habitat for critically endangered animals such as the orangutan.

Stream and forest ecosystems endangered by climate change - 26 Aug 2009

A study by Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the US found that a rare Arctic air mass that froze leaves in April 2007 caused the stream beneath the trees to receive more exposure to sunlight.

This in turn increased the spring growth of aquatic algae, bacteria, snails and other organisms.
However, global warming is causing forest plants and trees to leaf earlier, thus obstructing this seasonal development of biodiversity.

Study author Dr. Patrick Mulholland cautioned that the continuation of such a trend could cause serious disruption to entire ecosystems because the aquatic life no longer receives the timely warmth and stimulation of direct sunlight.

Dr. Patrick Mulholland and Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers, we are grateful for your detailed observations.

May people quickly heed such warning signs and turn to more considerate, eco-friendly ways to preserve our Earth’s beautiful biodiversity.

Kenya to plant billions of trees - 30 Aug 2009

Coinciding with the hosting of the 24th Climate Outlook Forum for the Greater Horn of Africa, in which climate-related issues such as serious drought and drying rivers were acknowledged, Kenya’s government has announced a vast tree-planting endeavor.

Seeking to replenish felled tree areas with a 10 percent forest cover nationwide, the plan is to plant 7.6 billion trees over the next 20 years.

Environment Minister John Michuki stated that in total, 4.1 million hectares of land would be re-forested. Our accolades Minister Michuki and Kenya for your dedication to returning your nation to a lush forested land. Blessed be such efforts in showing respect for all life on our planet.

Prince Charles launches innovative campaign to save rainforests - 8 Oct 2009

In collaboration with renowned celebrities and high-profile international companies, the United Kingdom’s Prince of Wales is initiating an “SOS” text campaign in which people from around the globe text their name and a short message in support of protecting rain forests.

In honor of the campaign, British musician Sting has created a new song about rainforests to the tune of his popular song, “Message in a Bottle.”

In a November event to be hosted by His Royal Highness, the SOS petition will be presented to leaders to take to the Denmark climate change meeting as a demonstration of the degree of public concern.

Prince Charles: Solving climate change is the precondition to ensuring security. And without adequately addressing tropical deforestation, we cannot have an answer to climate change.
It is that simple: saving the rainforest is not an option; it is actually an absolute necessity!

The fate of the world and her trees are in our hands - 21 Oct 2009

The Earth’s forests are protectors of the environment, helping to absorb excess greenhouse gases and purifying rivers and streams. As conveyed in Supreme Master Ching Hai’s #1 international best-selling book, “The Noble Wilds,” they also provide a beautiful safe-haven for humans and animals alike.

Following its recent launch, the German version of “The Noble Wilds” topped the Young Readers’ category at the major online bookstore Amazon.de.

During the event, Supreme Master Ching Hai cautioned that the forests are disappearing due to encroachment by livestock and that we must act quickly to protect them and the life they support.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: We have only 30% of land that covers the Earth. The rest is 70% is water We have only 30% of land. And of that precious 30%, one-third of is used, not for our true survival, but for livestock pasture or growing tons of grains for animal feed.

All to produce a few pieces of meat. And you swallow it in two seconds. And that few seconds will bring you tons of sickness, disease and suffering sorrow.

If even if we don’t have compassion for the animals, please do have compassion for ourselves.
The meat industry is the one we have to focus on to stop, to abolish. To stop the climate change.

Brazil , Argentina and Paraguay make forest conservation pledge -27 Oct 2009

During a recent UN-sponsored World Forestry Conference that gathered 3,500 delegates from 160 countries in Argentina, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) stated that the equivalent of 36 football fields are deforested each minute, calling for a net deforestation rate of zero by 2020 through a combination of reducing the rate of trees felled along with replanting.

Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, a country with only 30% of her rainforests remaining, joined with their pledges to achieve this goal. South America is home to the world’s largest remaining tropical rainforest, where destruction has been driven by the meat-producing cattle industry and soya crops, the vast majority of which are fed to livestock.

The conclusions from this meeting are being carried as recommendations to the December climate summit in Copenhagen. Bravo and many thanks, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and all World Forestry Conference participants for your commitment to preserving vital forests.

Let us all act similarly to sustain our biosphere through a respect for the sanctity of all life. Speaking at an August 2009 videoconference in Thailand, Supreme Master Ching Hai reminded of meat’s extreme harm to the environment along with the promise of a better future if humanity chooses the veg solution.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: We’re too busy normally to think that we have better alternatives, meat being the most environmentally destructive food you can ever imagine. But once people are aware of the effect of their choices, they will change and they do change.

Rehabilitated rainforests support biodiversity - 29 Oct 2009

In a study published in the science journal Conservation Biology, Dr. David Edwards of the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom compared three areas of rainforest in northeast Borneo island, one being untouched original growth, the next, deforested regions that were actively replanted, and finally, deforested regions that were left unplanted.

He found that the actively rehabilitated forests recovered from logging and returned to untouched forest levels of biodiversity within 15 years. Dr. Edwards concluded that this study could provide good motivation to protect and restore previously logged forests, especially those that might be under additional threat of deforestation
for oil palm and other such crops.

Dr. Edwards and University of Leeds associates, we laud your findings that show how we can best assist our damaged rainforests as well as the ecosphere. May we all work together to help bring back the vitality and pristine beauty of our magnificent Earth.

Greenpeace Tân Tây Lan tường trình rằng kỹ nghệ sữa góp phần vào việc phá rừng ở Nam Dương và Mã Lai bằng cách cung cấp dầu cọ cho thú nuôi để lấy sữa (PKE).

Họ ước tính rằng chỉ một công ty chế sữa ở Tân Tây Lan thôi chịu trách nhiệm cho 364.000 tấn khí thải nhà kính do việc cung cấp PKE , với phụ thêm khí thải từ chính thú nuôi . Đồn điền trồng ở Nam Dương còn được biết là đang cung cấp PKE cho gia súc . Với việc cho thú nuôi ăn cỏ và việc cung cấp thực phẩm cho thú vật khiến rừng mưa ở Amazon bị hủy hoại , Greenpeace Tân Tây Lan đã giải thích trong tường trình này rằng cung cấp PKE cho thú vật là một trong 3 sự sử dụng hàng đầu của dầu cọ .

Câu trả lời cho mọi điều này khá rõ ràng . Ngừng tiêu thụ thịt . Lẽ ra phải ngừng từ hôm qua . Việc này sẽ loại trừ cái gọi là nhu cầu chăn nuôi súc vật , và sẽ lập tức trả lại số lượng đất đai khổng lồ cho sự bền vững của thiên nhiên hoặc phương pháp trồng trọt thiên nhiên nhằm cho phép đa dạng sinh học được bổ sung trở lại . Đây là cách chúng ta cần làm , và làm cho nhanh .

US pledges funds for forest conservation - 25 Nov 2010

At an event hosted by His Royal Highness Prince Charles, the United States pledged US$275 million to protect biodiversity and tropical forests in developing countries, as part of an effort to support sustainable development and curb global warming. According to US Ambassador Louis Susman, a majority of the funds would go toward the Amazon and Congo basins in South America and Africa.

Our accolades, Your Excellencies and Heaven bless United States for your contribution to saving the tropical forests and inhabitants’ lives. We look forward to more and more such
sustaining measures to stabilize our planet for present and future generations.

Ethiopia's green hero to plant more trees - 7 Jan 2010

In recognition of his eco-endeavors and achievements,the government recently awarded 11,000 acres of land to be planted with fruit trees to Ethiopian-born Gashaw Tahir and his Greenland Development Foundation. The foundation was established by Mr. Tahir in 2006 after he returned to his homeland from the USA and found that the once-green and life giving land had become dry and barren, along with rises in temperature, loss of wildlife and widespread malaria.

Mr. Tahir thus began to acquire land, employ young workers from Muslim and Christian communities and has now planted over 1 million trees as well as established a research center to bring information to families on modern farming techniques. He stated, “My motto is making Africa green again, not only by just planting trees, but by planting fruit trees that will sustain (and) make a difference in people's lives.

A big bravo, Mr. Gashaw Tahir, for your exemplary efforts to revive your homeland as well as create life-sustaining jobs for the young people of your country. May the Divine bless your work and that of many more such eco-caring citizens as we look forward to a sustained and bountiful Ethiopia.
