Relief news update from Sri Lanka - 5 Jan 2010

Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Sri Lanka.

In early October, the western Sri Lankan district of Puttalam was pummeled by a storm that brought powerful winds and heavy rains. Four people perished and at least 15 were hospitalized as trees were uprooted and over 1,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. Supreme Master Ching Hai donated US$10,000 in aid on October 5 with all her sympathy and prayers, an amount that could acquire US$109,000 in essential items purchased in the United States, based on Sri Lanka’s cost of living.

Traveling to the affected area, our Association’s relief team worked with the Disaster Management Center in the capital city of Colombo to go to distribute relief parcels to 135 affected families in Putallam District’s town of Chilaw.

The packages included such food items as rice, biscuits, coconut oil, sugar, tea leaves, dhal, and sweets, as well as mosquito nets, bath towels, pillow cases and detergent powder.

We appreciate the help of Colombo’s Disaster Management Center. Our gratefulness goes also to Supreme Master Ching Hai for her generous assistance to the distressed, and we thank our Association’s relief team for their attentive endeavors.

Wishing the Sri Lankan people a swift recuperation of their productive day-to-day lives, as such weather extremities subside through humanity’s gentler ways.

Relief news update from Iran - 6 Jan 2010

Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Iran.

On the morning of November 5, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake shook the southern Iranian province of Hormozgān, injuring up to 700 people, with some requiring hospitalization.

Conveying her tears of sadness and prayers for the afflicted, Supreme Master Ching Hai quickly offered US$15,000 for urgent items, asking that our native Association members please go to help the most desperate.

This amount could obtain US$55,000 in supplies, if bought in the United States, based on Iran’s cost of living. Our Association’s nearest relief team went immediately to the most stricken regions in Bandar Abbas County and found that while the victims had adequate daily necessities, they worried about repairing their damaged homes.

Cash contributions were thus made to 43 families, along with gifts of candies and SOS flyers describing the needed vegan solution for the planet’s balance. The recipients expressed their joy and gratitude to Supreme Master Ching Hai.

We join in appreciation for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s unconditional aid for the quake-affected, and also thank our Association’s relief team for their efforts. May the Iranian people be swiftly restored to the safety of their day-to-day lives as we strive for greater benevolence to stabilize our ecosphere.

Relief news update from Kenya - 7 Jan 2010

Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Kenya.

In October 2009, Kenya was overcome by unexpected floods due to heavy El Niño rains, causing at least two fatalities and displacing 500 families in the coastal Magarini District as homes and vast fields of crops were destroyed.

Furthermore, the conditions gave way for mosquito breeding grounds, putting residents at high risk of contracting malaria. On October 30, Supreme Master Ching Hai pledged US$10,000 to the storm-affected, while expressing her sorrowful heart and prayers.

This amount could acquire US$297,000 in emergency supplies if bought in the United States, based on the cost of living in Kenya. Association’s Kenyan relief team traveled to the afflicted region covering their own travel and related expenses of approximately US$1,100. There, they distributed food supplies and mosquito nets to the villagers, who expressed their deep thankfulness for Master’s support and care.

We are also grateful to Supreme Master Ching Hai for her loving assistance that brings comfort to the distressed, and to our Association’s relief team for their sincere efforts.

May the Providence grace the people of Kenya with a smooth recovery to the stability of day-to-day life, as humanity’s transition to kinder ways helps hasten the restoration of our planetary balance.

Relief news update for Haiti - 15 Jan 2010

Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update for Haiti.

Officials are currently stating that the 7.0-magnitude earthquake and aftershocks that occurred on Tuesday, January 12, may have taken the lives of over 100,000 people in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Countless others were trapped in the rubble of scores of collapsed buildings.

Bernt Aasen - UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and Caribbean: It had a center here just about 17 kilometers from Port-au-Prince and the destruction in the city is unbelievable. We don’t have any indication yet of the number of people that killed or injured but we are talking about thousands.

Ann M. Veneman – UNICEF Executive Director: It is estimated that 46% of Haiti’s nearly 10 million people are under the age of 18. The special needs of children for food, shelter, and protection must be factored in at the very onset of relief efforts. With a peacekeeping mission headquartered in the city, the United Nations has confirmed at least 16 personnel perished, with 56 injured and 100 still unaccounted for. Widespread electricity outages in the aftermath have plunged the city into darkness at night, escalating the distress as the many injured overwhelm hospital grounds and other survivors search desperately for missing relatives as well as basic supplies like food and water.

Meanwhile, teams from countries around the globe are beginning to arrive, with the first priorities being search, rescue and medical treatment. With deep condolences and her heartfelt prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai had asked our Association members to go and help the afflicted, offering funds as necessary to assist.

An initial amount of US$20,000 has been made available if needed to purchase medical and other materials.
This amount could acquire US$725,000 in emergency goods in the United States, based on Haiti’s cost of living. Two joint relief teams from the US and Canada, including three medical doctors, a nurse, and our Haitian Association member as a translator are obtaining supplies and swiftly going to attend to those most in need.

We thank all the international and Haitian government personnel for your concern and timely response.
Our gratefulness also for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s direct aid to comfort the quake-affected. We send our sympathies for the lives lost as we pray for Heaven’s protection of the survivors.
May we all work to ease calamities as these by living in greater harmony with the environment.
