    Default 70. Swine Flu Update

Major flu pandemic history revealed - 19 Jul 2009

Researchers at the University of Hong Kong and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in the US have found that the viruses triggering the three most lethal viral pandemics of the 20th century circulated in their near-complete form for years before reaching catastrophic levels.

For instance, the 1918 pandemic began when two separate H1N1 viruses were dispersed at the same time: the seasonal human flu and the H1N1 in pigs. These then merged and mutated by swapping genetic material, which infected millions and caused a full six percent of the global human population to perish.

University of Hong Kong microbiologist Dr. Guan Yi explained that the predecessor genes to the 1918 virus most likely were circulating as early as 1911, and that both the 1918 H1N1 and the 1957 “Asian” H2N2 viruses went through two rounds of swapping genetic material before becoming highly deadly, with the latter claiming several million lives. Although unofficial statistics may be as much as ten times higher, official estimates for those infected by the current swine flu are 136,432 afflicted across 137 countries, with 765 fatalities.

If the cruelly cramped and utterly filthy factory farms where such viruses originate are eliminated, these large scale pandemics would be far less likely to occur. In a vision of the healthy and carefree world that could exist for us all, the tropical southern Bahamas is a place where the wild relatives of farmed pigs co-exist in harmony and mutual joy with the locals, who have been feeding them for years, as well as tourists, who are delighted to see the pigs swim to greet them in the clear sea.

    Default 71. Swine Flu Update

Another mutation of swine flu imminent as humans pass the virus to pigs - 20 July 2009

Another mutation of swine flu imminent as humans pass the virus to pigs. 20 July 2009

The Argentine government has issued an emergency health alert after pig herds on two separate farms were found to have the new variant of swine flu that has become a pandemic in humans. Although this version of the virus has caused only mild symptoms in pigs, it poses the threat of mutating and being passed back onto humans in an even more deadly form.

Pigs are known to be effective virus carriers for humans, other pigs and birds, which can then be passed back to humans. This was shown to be the case in the 1918 pandemic which took the lives of 100 million people. Currently, even with countries such as
Canada no longer keeping a record due to the innumerable people who have been afflicted, the global toll for the A(H1N1) pandemic continues to rise, with 779 fatalities that have occurred among the 137,232 officially reported cases across 137 countries.

A first fatality in the Southeast Asia region was also just reported in Singapore. Argentina, with at least 137 lives lost, now has the highest number of fatalities after the United States, whose count was at 263 as of last Friday. In addition, Saudi Arabia has seen more than 30 cases within a 24-hour period, for a total of 285 confirmed. Experts in the US are saying that more than one million in the nation are likely infected at this time, with another rise expected when school starts again.

As reported by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), expectant mothers have also been seen to be especially vulnerable. Even though they make up just 1 percent of the US population, they represent 8 percent of patients with severe swine flu cases.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with those mourning the loss of a loved one as well as all who are suffering from this most costly pandemic. We look forward to the day when the health-encouraging plant-based diet makes these unnatural pig herds and their resultant meat consumption a thing of the past, for the safety and vitality of all humanity.

Canadian man resistant to swine flu antiviral medicine - 24 July 2009

Canadian man resistant to swine flu antiviral medicine.

A 60-year-old Quebec gentleman is now the fifth person believed to have contracted

swine flu prior to being given a precautionary dose of the antiviral medication Tamiflu, after which he developed a resistance. He is one of five people as far apart as Japan, Denmark and Hong Kong, who developed an antiviral resistance, leading experts to fear the implications for protecting public health from swine flu.

A new mother became Tonga’s first fatality after undergoing an emergency delivery to save her baby, while Laos and Hungary also reported their first fatalities. The number of cases in Egypt has swelled to 145, raising further public health concerns during the upcoming Muslim Hajj pilgrimage. Countries with the highest numbers of confirmed cases include Australia at 14,037, Mexico at 14,229 and the United States at 40,617, as well as United Kingdom, Chile and Canada, all at more than 10,000 confirmed illnesses in their nations. The official global number is 151,656with 868 fatalities across 139 countries.

However, health ministries and the World Health Organization indicate that actual numbers are at least 10 times higher. This past week alone, new swine flu cases in England doubled to 100,000, with 840 people hospitalized, 63 of whom are in critical condition.

To help relieve some ofthe pressure on doctors, the UK’s London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has partnered with the Health Protection Agency to provide swine flu information as well as collect it through a website called flusurvey.org.uk. Emulating an approach being successfully used by four other European nations, the website describes latest treatment medicines along with showing the spread of the illness and symptoms so that people can obtain tentative diagnoses for themselves.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and British Health Protection Agency, we appreciate this helpful tool for keeping people better protected and informed. It sorrows us to seethe deplorable state and devastating effect of factory farms, which virtually breed such pandemics, causing grief to countless families. We envision the day when all animals are free and all humans liberated from disease through the most healthful organic vegan diet.
