Relief news update from Tennessee - 14 May 2010
Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Tennessee.
On May 1, heavy storms hit the states of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi in the east and southeastern regions of the United States, claiming at least 31 lives and causing widespread damage.
As thousands of streets and buildings became inundated, residents were forced to evacuate, with many wading up to chest-high in water or having to use boats.
In Nashville, Tennessee alone, more than 2,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, which left 2,600 people homeless. While not all victims could be reached immediately, federal and state governments as well as many aid groups and communities themselves mobilized both emergency and longer-term rebuilding assistance.
Relief recipient 1 (F): The water was rushing through so fast, it got up to about five feet high down here. It was terrible, it was so scary.
Relief recipient 2 (F): It hasn't happened in about 50 years, and we really figured we were going to be okay, until we waded in chest-deep water to try to get clothes so we'd have something to wear.
VOICE: Immediately after the tragic disaster, Supreme Master Ching Hai sent her condolences and prayers along with a donation of US$4,600 so that our Association members could bring urgent relief supplies to the not-yet-reached parts of Nashville, Tennessee, the hardest-hit area.
Our Association’s relief team purchased cleaning supplies, including washcloths, disposable wipes, mops and pails, and delivered them to the most devastated communities.
In addition, approximately 50 households received financial aid ranging from US$40 to US$300 according to need.
Relief recipient 2 (F): Yes, we need this. Thank you so much! One group of about 50 families with small children living in still-stranded trailer homes wholeheartedly expressed their thanks, as they had not received adequate assistance yet.
Relief recipient 3 (F): They all have children, and there’s no aid, no diapers, no food, nothing. I have three children here.
VOICE: One aid recipient later even called the relief team from the hospital after she gave birth to send her gratefulness to Supreme Master Ching Hai, saying that she was so touched to know that someone in the world cares so much for others. Others also conveyed their appreciation.
Relief recipient 1 (F): Thank you. I wasn’t expecting that. You’re going to make me cry. Thank you.
Relief recipient 2 (F): Thank you so much Supreme Master Ching Hai. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and for this trailer court.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. You do not know what you have done. Thank you, thank you.
VOICE: Our appreciation to the federal and state governments, organizations and all others who have been helping the storm victims.
We also thank Supreme Master Ching Hai for her rapid and caring support and our Association’s relief team for their dedicated efforts.
We pray for the storm afflicted residents’ smooth return to their productive day-to-day lives, and that such weather extremes diminish through our collective choice of eco-conscious lifestyles.

Relief news update from Hunan , China - 21 May 2010
Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Hunan,China.
Relentless rains have been continuously wreaking havoc in central Hunan province, where most recently cave-ins, or land collapses were set off across a 500,000-square-meter area near a Ningxiang County mine.
The county government relocated 28 families as land collapsing to depths of 15 meters damaged homes as well as buildings and bridges, affecting nearly 7,000 people.
The rains had also triggered mountain floods in the Xinhua County of Loudi City, with four people who perished and 15,000 who were affected in the worst-hit town of Fengjia alone, where more than 100 homes collapsed and electricity, communications and transportation were paralyzed. Upon hearing of these disasters, Supreme Master Ching Hai donated an initial US$10,000, conveying her sorrow and prayers as she asked that our nearby Association members please go as soon as possible to render emergency aid.
Combined with our Association member’s contributions, the total US$12,200 donation could purchase US$87,000 in urgent supplies obtained in the United States, based on China’s cost of living.
As per Supreme Master Ching Hai’s request for updates, the following is our Chinese Association relief team’s report.
May 18, 2010
Re: Disaster Relief in Hunan Province Most Beloved Master,Early on May 11, we set out to Shuanglin District of Fengjia Town.
On the way, we saw collapsed homes, bridges, and structures everywhere, including the historically significant 2,000-year-old Ziquejie Terrace, which had been a governmental nature and cultural heritage site. Upon arriving at Shuanglin, we found that 12 out of 15 kilometers of the mountain road to Fengjia Town was destroyed, stranding victims whose food supplies were dwindling.
So we rushed back to Xinhua County overnight and immediately purchased 8 tons of rice that filled a truck, which the warehouse leader generously arranged for us.
The roads back to Shuanglin were treacherous amidst the pouring rain and dangerous conditions. With prayer, we safely arrived and, assisted by the local government,we distributed the rice to the victims. Upon receiving the supplies, the villagers gratefully said, 『Now we have no problems with food.』 Still, most of the farmlands were destroyed, so we went back again to Xinhua County to pack another 10 tons of rice overnight.
Unfortunately, heavy rain of over 100 millimeters fell that night, causing a lot of landslides, and the fully loaded trucks could not pass through.
We thus entrusted the supplies to the warehouse leader to send to local officials in Fengjia to distribute to victims once the roads were cleared.
Meanwhile, we traveled by foot on a muddy mountain road to visit four bereaved families, giving each monetary aid and encouraging them to adopt the vegan diet to help ensure a stabilized future. We also met a disabled lady whose house had collapsed, and gave her some relief money.
They all expressed their immense gratitude. We also gave informative flyers and books on the eco-stabilizing vegan lifestyle for local officials to distribute, and they expressed their appreciation on behalf of the victims. During the relief work, we were touched by the locals’ selfless help to one another. We were also glad to see how Master’s love brought both material and spiritual comfort to the victims.
Chinese Relief Team

We earnestly appreciate the help of the Chinese government and officials in assisting the disaster-stricken. We also thank Supreme Master Ching Hai for her unconditional support to the vulnerable , as well as our Association’s relief team for their altruistic diligence.
May Heaven bless the Chinese people to soon resume lives of comforting regularity as we pray for such conditions to ease through humanity’s greater consideration of all beings.

Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Oklahoma, USA.
The central US state has been struck by numerous storms, the latest of which brought 16 tornadoes on Wednesday, May 19.
Along with damage to several homes and businesses, power lines were downed and a few people sustained minor injuries.
Just a week earlier on May 10, 18 powerful wind funnels with winds of more than 100 miles-per-hour in some places had cost the lives of five people perished and caused more than 110 to be injured, as trees were uprooted and vehicles overturned.
Governor Brad Henry pledged assistance, declaring an emergency in over two-thirds of the state’s counties as dozens of homes were lost and tens of thousands of others were without power.
Conveying her condolences and deep concern, Supreme Master Ching Hai asked our local Association members to see if help was needed, saying that financial aid would be available as necessary.
Covering their own travel expenses, our Oklahoman Association members quickly went to assess the needs in several areas including the severely hit city of Norman, where two people had lost their lives and 40 houses were destroyed in the May 10 wind funnel.
In response to a request from the main shelter, the relief team delivered supplies of nutritious vegan food, drinking water, and fuel for powering equipment to help clear debris.
The local residents, who were struggling to begin clean-up of their damaged homes and neighborhoods, were thankful for the unexpected extra aid. Meanwhile, our Association members also have offered to assist a family with three injured children who had lost their mother in the storm.
We are thankful for the initiatives of Governor Henry and all other officials and personnel in providing meaningful help to the storm victims.
Our gratefulness also for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s loving concern and the efforts of our Association’s relief team.
Wishing the storm-affected a swift return to their peaceful day-to-day lives and that such traumatic events subside through our gentler care of the planet.

Relief news update from Poland - 5 Jun 2010
Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Poland.
In May, the Central European nation received an onslaught of relentless rain that resulted in the worst floods in over a decade, claiming at least 18 lives. Tens of thousands of people were also displaced as rivers burst their banks and 48,000 farms in the basins of the two largest Polish rivers, the Vistula and Oder, were submerged.
As the Polish government and nongovernmental organizations struggled to render timely aid to the afflicted, Supreme Master Ching Hai had also donated US$10,000, conveying her deep condolences and prayers as she asked that our Association members please go help those most in need.
Our Association members from Poland and France determined which were the worst-stricken communities and quickly went to conduct relief in two separate teams.
Covering their own expenses, one group went to Łódź province in central Poland, while another drove to Silesian province in the south, where some 350 households had been afflicted.
Though the roads were in such poor condition that it caused one of the relief team’s cars to break down, they continued on to the heavily-hit Wilamowice town and Bestwina village in Bielsko County, where they found that homes, farms, and crops everywhere were inundated.
There, they helped 40 families in need, providing them with nutritious plant-based food as well as cleaning, medical, and hygienic supplies along with informative SOS leaflets on the vegan solution to our current planetary instability.
The relief recipients were touched and expressed their gratitude for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s aid. Our appreciation, all Polish governments, organizations, and individuals, for your meaningful assistance to the flood-afflicted in Poland.
We also thank Supreme Master Ching Hai for her wholehearted care of the vulnerable, as well as our Association members for their diligent endeavors.
May Heaven bless Poland with a smooth recuperation, as such weather extremities subside through humanity’s transition to kinder, eco-conscious ways.

Over the past several months, frequent disasters in southern Âu Lạc’s Mekong Delta, such as droughts, floods, and mudslides, have left a heavy toll, especially on the region’s low-income residents.
One particularly large mudslide in the Châu Phú district of An Giang province destroyed a long portion of a highway, and caused the collapse of many houses, from which many residents had to flee empty-handed.
Months later, residents are still struggling to recover. Conveying her concern and prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai donated US$10,000 for our Association’s relief team to go see if they could help alleviate the victims’ situation. This amount could purchase US$160,000 in essential items if acquired in the United States, based on Âu Lạc’s cost of living.
Once they arrived in the worst-hit areas, our Association’s local relief team was able to distribute 53 gift packages of plenty of rice and noodles to the most desperate households.
Each family also received cash assistance with amounts that varied depending on the extent of their hardship. The touched residents sent their heartfelt gratefulness to Supreme Master Ching Hai for thinking of them.

On June 8, an intense rainstorm deluged western Luxi County of Hunan province in southern China with up to 120 millimeters of precipitation. Some 193,500 people in 15 towns and villages were affected.
Expressing her love and prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai had requested that our Association members please go help those most in need. She also donated approximately US$9,000 in aid, an amount that could purchase US$64,000 in emergency items bought in the United States, based on China’s cost of living.
As per Supreme Master Ching Hai’s requests for updates, the following is a report from our Association’s relief team in China.
June 15, 2010
Re: Disaster relief in Hunan Province Most Beloved Master,
On June 13, we went to Luxi County and immediately contacted local government leaders to discuss relief work and specific arrangements. In accordance with Master’s instructions, we ordered good quality rice, cooking oil, mineral water, and other urgently needed materials.
Early the next morning, before the relief goods arrived, we visited a family whose home had been swept away by the debris flow, with three of the six family members who had perished, including the father who lost his life as he protected his severely injured youngest son with his own body.
The boy is now being cared for by his mother and 16-year-old sister, who were working elsewhere at the time of the disaster. To help them, we gave them Master’s monetary assistance. We then traveled 3 hours by car to another village, where 243 houses had been inundated, including 16 that had collapsed, and 200 hectares (3,010 mu) of rice fields that were affected.
Further cash aid was provided to the six families most in need there whose homes had been toppled, along with 25 kilograms of rice and 5 kilograms of cooking oil for each of the 43 families, totaling 198 residents throughout the village.
We also went to visit 17 families who were waiting for tents after being left with nothing but the clothes on their bodies when the storm and floods carried away all of their properties.
Each received monetary aid, as well as 50 kilograms of rice, 5 kg cooking oil, instant noodles and mineral water.
Throughout the relief work, our Association members also gave victims information on the vegan solutions for health, harmony, and sustainability.
The relief recipients conveyed their deep appreciation to Master for her caring gifts.
Many were moved to tears, including an elderly lady who kneeled down in thankfulness.
We, too, thank Master, for giving us the opportunity to share and experience your love.

Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Chile.
On February 27, an unforgettably intense 8.8 magnitude earthquake shook southern Chile and also set off a coastal tsunami. The combination caused hundreds of people to lose their lives and left thousands more homeless.
Sending her condolences and sorrowful prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai had immediately donated US$20,000, asking that our local Association members please go to bring aid and comfort to those most in need.
This amount could obtain US$63,000 in materials if bought in the United States, based on Chile’s cost of living. Months after helping to deliver food and other emergency items to many severely hit areas, our Association’s Chilean relief team continued looking out for people who might need recovery assistance.
Thus, during the month of June, more than 50 quake-affected families in Santiago city who were still living in tents received non-perishable vegan food. The relief team also reached out to the Hogar de Cristo charity nursing home in Santa Cruz. This facility had been badly damaged in the quake and was now struggling to support its 60 elderly residents’ basic needs due to financial hardship.
Paulina Leiva Muñoz – Coordinator, Hogar de Cristo - 6th Region, Chile (F): Our house, unfortunately after the earthquake was turned into nothing.
VOICE: To help provide for some of the nursing home’s needs, our Association’s relief team brought supplies that included diapers, disinfectant, medicines, cotton, shampoo, and soap. The delighted residents also received personal gifts of cookies and Supreme Master Ching Hai’s #1 international bestseller, “The Dogs in My Life.”
Giovanna – Staff, Hogar de Cristo nursing home (F): Now we are very happy after receiving the huge donation and support for our elders. Needless to say, thank you to Supreme Master Ching Hai, very grateful.
Paulina Leiva Muñoz – Coordinator (F): Thank you, Supreme Master Ching Hai and to all members of the Association, for the extreme generosity that you’ve had with the goal of coming to aid the most in need.
VOICE: We join in gratefulness for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s unconditional care extended to the Chilean people, and for our Association relief team’s diligent assistance.

Relief news update from Mexico - 25 Jul 2010
Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Mexico.
In late June, over 30 lives were lost as hurricane Alex descended upon Mexico. There were 15 fatalities in northeastern Nuevo León state alone, where floods heavily affected infrastructure and caused 61,000 people to lose power.
Conveying her deep condolences and prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai had donated US$15,000, an amount that could obtain US$53,000 in emergency materials purchased in the United States, based on Mexico's cost of living, while asking that our nearby Association members please go to render aid. Upon investigation, our Mexican Association members learned that the Anáhuac municipality in Nuevo León had been inundated, with 300 families who had to evacuate as they lost their homes and furniture to waters released from a regional dam that had been in danger of overflowing.
As soon as conditions allowed, the relief team travelled through the continued torrential rains to Anáhuac. There, officials from the city's Water and Drainage management guided them to the shelter in which most of the storm-afflicted were housed.
With the kind offer of help from the 7th Area State Military Nuevo León personnel, the relief team was able to distribute vegan food supplies, soy milk, water, shelter canopies, blankets, clothes, diapers, mattresses and other personal necessities.
The recipients were overwhelmed with gratitude for Supreme Master Ching Hai's special aid, with some who could not help their tears as they thanked her for remembering them. As informative SOS fliers on the vegan solution to stabilize such catastrophes were also given out, the residents also expressed a sense of comfort upon realizing they could do something to help the environment, as many were in desperate situations, having lost their homes.
Our Association members continue to monitor the situation to see if more help is needed. Our appreciation goes to the Mexican officials and military personnel for their ready assistance. We also thank Supreme Master Ching Hai for her heartfelt aid to the storm-stricken and our Association's relief team for their diligence and care.
Our prayers for the smooth recovery of the Mexican people to productive regularity as such devastations are alleviated through humanity's increased benevolence toward each other and the ecosphere.

Relief News Update from Formosa (Taiwan) - 15 Oct 2010
Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Formosa (Taiwan).
On September 19, Typhoon Fanapi struck southern Formosa as the most severe storm to hit the island this year. It brought major floods, with related disasters that cost three people their lives and injured 75 others.
Conveying her love and prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai had immediately requested that our Association members please help the storm-stricken, saying that funds were available for emergency needs. As per her instructions, our Association members from Formosa went the day of to render aid to the storm afflicted and reported the situation to Supreme Master Ching Hai.
Upon receiving details about the initial relief work, she asked that they please go check to see if additional help was needed and to continue the relief efforts as necessary. After investigating, two relief teams set out, with donations of approximately US$13,000 that were contributed by our Association members. The team in Kaohsiung County went to Kaohsiung Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages, which they had found to be the most severely affected school. Thankfully, President Ma Ying-jeou had personally gone to inspect the location and assigned the Ministry of Education and Kaohsiung City Government to assist as soon as possible, so no further help was needed.

President Ma Ying-jeou (M): Nowadays, climate change is a reality. So I’m here to support you. Please don’t feel discouraged. We will support you, okay? Let’s work together. We will support Kaohsiung City and work with you. Thanks, thanks, thanks. Let’s express our support for Kaohsiung. Kaohsiung! (Crowd: Go!) Kaohsiung! (Crowd: Go!) Kaohsiung, Kaohsiung, Kaohsiung! (Crowd: Go, go, go!)
VOICE: Meanwhile in the worst-hit Gangshan Township, shelters for stray animals were affected, particularly the Aranya Dog Sanctuary, where floodwaters had reached four meters high. Mr. Shyue-Ren Chen, who owned and ran the charity, had moved 400 dogs to higher grounds by himself, receiving multiple cuts and bruises in his efforts. Both he and the dogs remained stranded for two days with only a small amount of dog food and half a bottle of water before they were rescued. While the organization Animal Rescue Team Taiwan (ARTT) had offered to help Mr. Chen rebuild the sanctuary, the surviving dogs were still in need of medicine and foods. Our Association’s relief team quickly contacted Mr. Chen to convey Supreme Master Ching Hai’s love and thank him for his selfless care of the animals in need. After discussing the canines’ necessities, our Association members visited the sanctuary, bringing 40 packs of vegan dog food.
Mr. Chen Shiue-ren, Owner of the dog sanctuary (M): This is the first time a religious group, which is the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association, come here to show concern. The concern from religious groups brings a bright hope to me. Here, I would like to send my deep gratitude, thank you!
Wu Ting-xu, Volunteer PR of Animal Rescue Team Taiwan (M): Today, we thank the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association for their donation. Before, the dogs did lack foods and some materials. So today, after they sent goodies to the dogs, the dogs at least won’t go hungry. We are very grateful. Thank you!
Volunteers of Animal Rescue Team Taiwan: Be Veg, Go Green 2 Save the Planet! Yeah!
VOICE: We are grateful for the caring endeavors of President Ma Ying-jeou, Mr. Shyue-Ren Chen and such organizations as Animal Rescue Team Taiwan, as we also thank Supreme Master Ching Hai for her compassionate support and our Association’s relief teams for their diligent efforts. May Heaven bless the Formosan people and animals alike with a swift recovery of their regular daily lives, as humanity’s greater consideration for each other and the ecosphere helps stabilize our planet.
* For his caring rescue of hundreds of dogs in a time of disaster, Supreme Master Ching Hai is honoring Mr. Chen with the Shining World Hero Award, along with a US$10,000 donation for the Aranya Dog Sanctuary.

Relief News Update from Formosa (Taiwan) - 19 Oct 2010
Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Formosa (Taiwan).
In September, the island’s most major storm of the year caused severe flooding in southern regions, with three people who lost their lives and 75 others injured.
As per Supreme Master Ching Hai’s request at the time, our Formosan (Taiwanese) Association members immediately traveled to the affected regions to assist the area’s residents. Upon receiving their report of the situation, Supreme Master Ching Hai conveyed her love and prayers for the storm victims and asked that our Association’s relief team please check to see if more help was required. Offering further funds if needed, she requested that they continue the relief work as necessary.
Following their next assessments, two relief teams set out with approximately US$13,000 that had been donated by our Formosan Association members. While one group worked in Kaohsiung, the other relief team went to Pingtung County, where 890 villagers from 547 households in Laiyi, Sandimen and Maijia townships had been displaced. In Laiyi, which suffered the greatest losses, continued torrential rains had also set off a massive landslide, causing many residents to lose their dwellings and all their belongings. Residents told our Association members that when they went to clean up their homes, all they could see was mud and rocks. However, they said they could not afford to buy a new house and did not know where to go to live or find a job.
Our Association members purchased vegan food supplies and other necessities, making several trips to deliver them to the grateful victims who were staying in shelters or some, in their damaged homes. The supplies included hundreds of boxes of vegan food items, drinking water, soy milk powder, tissue paper, towels, and diapers, as well as monetary aid to 40 of the households that were most in need.
(In Chinese)
Relief team member (M): We have arranged a couple of relief supplies deliveries. Today is the third time, and we are also distributing emergency funds. On behalf of Supreme Master Ching Hai, we would like to express our warm regards to you. We also hope that you will be able to quickly restore your homes.
(Aboriginal language)
Villager, Laiyi Township (M): I’m grateful for the love from Supreme Master Ching Hai. We have received abundant supplies.
(In Chinese)
Liang Ming-hui, Chairman, Aboriginal Cultural and Educational Association, Pingtung County (M): We are very grateful for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s love. Right after Typhoon Fanapi passed, Supreme Master Ching Hai’s team was the first group who called us.
VOICE: We also are thankful for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s unconditional support, as well as for the endeavors of our Association’s relief teams. May the Formosan people be graced to smoothly recover the regularity of their day-to-day lives as such calamities are eased through humanity’s more conscientious care of each other and the ecosphere.
Supreme Master Ching Hai is sending an additional US$20,000 donation for any extra urgent needs, with all her love and prayers for the afflicted.

Relief News Update from Guatemala - 24 Oct 2010
Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Guatemala.
With recent months bringing an onslaught of tropical storms and landslides, the Guatemalan people have suffered the loss of loved ones, including many rescue workers. In particular, residents of the hard-hit Department of Izabal are still recovering from floods that hit in late August when the Motagua River burst its banks.
(In Spanish)
Victim, widow (F): We have suffered because the river ran us out; whatever we could, we took it out and the rest, we couldn’t.
Correspondent in Guatemala (F): We're in front of the Village of Mojanales of the Puerto Barrios District, here in Guatemala. And as we can see behind me we have some ruins of the school that was there, which has been swept away by the Motagua River with its huge swelling. The residents are worried but we wish that very soon they’ll have their new locations.
Victim, widow (F): Yes, we are in a bitter disaster… waiting, as they say, for whatever people bring us, because we cannot make a living. I am a widow... I just owe my trust in you and thank you very much.
VOICE: Soon after the storm, Supreme Master Ching Hai donated US$15,000 while sending her heartfelt condolences and prayers as she asked that our nearby Association members please go if possible to help the most afflicted. This amount could purchase US$134,000 in supplies if obtained in the United States, based on Guatemala’s cost of living. With our Association members contributing US$440 toward travel and related expenses, the relief team from Costa Rica travelled to Guatemala’s Department of Izabal where seven rural communities had not yet received help due to inaccessibility because of collapsed bridges.
Correspondent (F): We are in the Cinchao area, on my right, the Motagua River, as we can see, they have to be transported by boat, due to the destruction of the bridge. In the background we can see part of the Motagua bridge that was destroyed because of the rising Motagua River.
VOICE: The country’s National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction agency along with the local governor’s office, the Guatemalan Red Cross and others assisted our Association’s relief team in distributing family food packages that contained large amounts of flour, rice, beans, vegetable oil, a plant-based protein powder, sugar, and salt, along with SOS flyers informing of the vegan solution to global warming and related disasters.
Byron Solares – Governor of Izabal Department, Guatemala (M): We feel very happy for the help that Master Ching Hai is giving us, because we really have many problems due to heavy rains that we had in the whole nation.
Widow victim (F): We give many thanks to the Master!
Community President of the Village of Xiux, Morales Izabal (M): Good evening, Master Ching Hai, I am pleased with the help you have given to my neighbors in this community and may God always bless you and prosper you even more.
Correspondent (F): Reporting for Supreme Master Television from Guatemala.
VOICE: With thanks to all helping governments and agencies in Guatemala, we also are grateful to Supreme Master Ching Hai for her loving support as well as for the efforts of our Association’s relief team. May the storm-afflicted residents soon regain the comforting regularity of their daily lives as we pray that weather extremities like these subside through our more considerate care of the ecosphere.
