Reading I (Wis 6:12-16)

A Reading from the Book of Wisdom

Resplendent and unfading is wisdom, and she is readily perceived by those who love her, and found by those who seek her. She hastens to make herself known in anticipation of their desire; whoever watches for her at dawn shall not be disappointed, for he shall find her sitting by his gate. For taking thought of wisdom is the perfection of prudence, and whoever for her sake keeps vigil shall quickly be free from care; because she makes her own rounds, seeking those worthy of her, and graciously appears to them in the ways, and meets them with all solicitude.

Reading II (1 Thes 4:13-18)

A Reading from the first Letter of St. Paul to the Thesolonians:

We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep. Indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will surely not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself, with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God, will come down from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore, console one another with these words.

Gospel (Mt 25:1-13)

The Gospel According to St. Matthew:

Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise ones replied, ‘No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.’ While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked. Afterwards the other virgins came and said, ‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’ But he said in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

1. What is the major difference between the wise and the foolish virgins?

Từ sáng sớm, ai tỉnh thức tiến lại gần nó, sẽ không lao nhọc, vì sẽ gặp nó ngồi nơi cửa nhà mình. Vậy tưởng nhớ đến nó là được khôn sáng vẹn tuyền; và ai tỉnh thức vì nó, sẽ chóng được an tâm. Anh em thân mến, chúng tôi chẳng muốn để anh em không biết gì về số phận những người đã an nghỉ, để anh em khỏi buồn phiền như những người khác, là những kẻ không có niềm hy vọng. Vì nếu chúng ta tin Đức Giêsu đã chết và đã sống lại, thì cũng vậy, những người đã chết nhờ Đức Giêsu, Thiên Chúa sẽ đem họ đến làm một với Người.

Bởi vậy, chúng tôi dựa vào lời Chúa để nói cùng anh em điều này: chúng ta, những kẻ đang sống, những kẻ còn sót lại khi Chúa đến, thì chúng ta không đi trước những người đã an nghỉ. Khi ấy, Chúa Giêsu phán cùng các môn đệ dụ ngôn này: “Nước trời giống như mười trinh nữ cầm đèn đi đón chàng rể. Trong số đó có năm cô khờ dại và năm cô khôn ngoan. Năm cô khờ dại mang đèn mà không đem dầu theo; còn những cô khôn ngoan đã mang đèn lại đem dầu đầy bình. Vì chàng rể đến chậm, nên các cô đều thiếp đi và ngủ cả.

“Nửa đêm có tiếng hô to: Kìa chàng rể đến, hãy ra đón người. Bấy giờ các trinh nữ đều chỗi dậy, sửa soạn đèn của mình. Những cô khờ dại nói với các cô khôn ngoan rằng: ‘Các chị cho chúng em chút dầu, vì đèn của chúng em đã tắt cả.’ Các cô khôn ngoan đáp lại rằng: ‘E không đủ cho chúng em và các chị, các chị ra nhà hàng mà mua thì hơn.’ Song khi họ đang đi mua, thì chàng rể đến. Những trinh nữ đã sẵn sàng thì theo chàng rể cùng vào tiệc cưới, và cửa đóng lại. Reflections
Reading I

Several writings of the Hebrew Scriptures are called “wisdom” books because they help us think about and understand humanity’s long search for wisdom. Wisdom is the God-given gift to know what is right and to do it. Today’s poetic reading pictures wisdom as a woman. She is splendid and eternal. Wisdom willingly appears to those who “keep vigil” for her. Wisdom comes to those who seek her in the scriptures, in prayer, and in a life focused on God. A wise person tries to make the best choices for his or her actions and life.

What are some ways we can get mixed up when we try to understand what is the right thing to do? Do you know anyone who is a wise person who you can count on for good advice? Why would you call this person wise? Have you ever prayed to know what to do? What are some ways people become wise? Have you ever learned from the experience of making a wrong choice?

Reading II

One of the hardest experiences in life is the death of a loved one. Paul understood this very well and assures the Thessalonians that their loved ones who had died in Christ would rise again. How can Paul’s letter be a source of hope for you?

Have you ever been to a funeral Mass? What are some things that happen there? Why does the church say that it “celebrates” a funeral? Do you know what grief is? Why do you think Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted?” How does hope help grief?

Gospel

Why do we need the gift of wisdom? Why do we need to be prepared daily for Christ’s coming? The parable in today’s gospel provides some answers. According to the parable, five foolish bridesmaids go out to meet the bridegroom without bringing any extra oil for their lamps (the bridegroom in this story represents Christ). When the bridegroom finally arrives at midnight, the foolish bridesmaids have to run off in the opposite direction to purchase more oil. By the time they get back, the door to the wedding celebration is locked. And the groom says to them “I do not know you.”

A parable is a story told to teach a lesson. What is the lesson of the story of the wise and foolish bridesmaids? Name some ways that Jesus comes into our lives. How does Jesus come at life’s end? How can we wisely be ready when he comes? According to this story, can wisdom be borrowed? Name some wise people or wisdom figures in our lives who can help us to discover sensible ways of acting. Why would an oil lamp burning be a symbol of wisdom and remind you of this gospel?

St. Charles Borromeo

The name of St. Charles Borromeo is associated with reform. He lived during the time of the Protestant Reformation, and had a hand in the reform of the whole Church during the final years of the Council of Trent.

Although he belonged to Milanese nobility and was related to the powerful Medici family, he desired to devote himself to the Church. When his uncle, Cardinal de Medici, was elected pope in 1559 as Pius IV, he made Charles cardinal-deacon and administrator of the Archdiocese of Milan while he was still a layman and a young student. Because of his intellectual qualities he was entrusted with several important offices connected with the Vatican and later appointed secretary of state with responsibility for the papal states. The untimely death of his elder brother brought Charles to a definite decision to be ordained a priest, despite relatives’ insistence that he marry. Soon after he was ordained a priest at the age of 25, he was consecrated bishop of Milan.

Because of his work at the Council of Trent, he was not allowed to take up residence in Milan until the Council was over. Charles had encouraged the pope to renew the Council in 1562 after it had been suspended for 10 years. Working behind the scenes, St. Charles deserves the credit for keeping the Council in session when at several points it was on the verge of breaking up. He took upon himself the task of the entire correspondence during the final phase.

Eventually Charles was allowed to devote his time to the Archdiocese of Milan, where the religious and moral picture was far from bright. The reform needed in every phase of Catholic life among both clergy and laity was initiated at a provincial council of all the bishops under him. Specific regulations were drawn up for bishops and other clergy: If the people were to be converted to a better life, he had to be the first to give a good example and renew their apostolic spirit.

Charles took the initiative in giving good example. He allotted most of his income to charity, forbade himself all luxury and imposed severe penances upon himself. He sacrificed wealth, high honors, esteem and influence to become poor. During the plague and famine of 1576, he tried to feed 60,000 to 70,000 people daily. To do this he borrowed large sums of money that required years to repay. Whereas the civil authorities fled at the height of the plague, he stayed in the city, where he ministered to the sick and the dying, helping those in want.

Work and the heavy burdens of his high office began to affect his health. He died at the age of 46.
