I.Năm Thánh Phaolô

Cách nay hơn một năm, Đức Giáo Hoàng Bênêdictô XVI đã công bố năm Thánh Phaolô bắt đầu từ ngày 28.6.2008 cho đến 29.6.2009. Toàn Thể Giáo Hội được kêu gọi dành trọn thời gian được ấn định trên để mừng sinh nhật 2000 năm của vị tông đồ dân ngoại nầy. Đồng thời, tỏ lòng ngưỡng mộ và tri ân công đức lớn lao của Thánh Phaolô đối với Giáo Hội.

Tạị sao lại dành suốt một năm cho Thánh Phaolô? Thường Giáo Hội hay dành suốt một năm để kêu gọi tín hữu qui hướng về một chủ đề đức tin như năm 2000 Chúa Kitô, Đấng Cứu Thế duy nhất; hay năm gia đình; hay năm truyền giáo hay năm Giáo Dục Kitô Giáo. Nhưng lần nầy Giáo Hội dành cả năm cho Thánh Phaolô, ca tụng Ngài như Đấng xây nền Giáo Hội sơ khai. Ngày lễ kính Thánh Phaolô cũng đặc biệt: chọn ngày 25.1, ngày Thánh Phaolô trở lại hay cũng quen gọi là ngày Thánh Phaolô ngã ngựa. Ngày Thánh Phaolô trở lại được coi như ngày mở đầu cho việc truyền giáo, truyền giáo cho dân ngoại. Truyền giáo là Kitô hoá thế giới, làm cho thế giới đón nhận Chúa Kitô, Đấng cứu độ. Nên Giáo Hội coi Thánh Phaolô là Đấng Sáng Lập Kitô Giáo thứ nhì sau Chúa Kitô. Ngài xứng đáng được ca tụng và vinh danh trong suốt một năm.

Chúng ta có thể làm gì để ca tụng, vinh danh và tri ơn Thánh Phalô? Nên làm những việc sau:

Đọc và học sách Công Vụ sứ đồ

Đọc và học mười bốn lá thư của Thánh Phalô gửi các giáo đoàn.

Hành hương kính viếng những nhà thờ mang tên Thánh Phaolô hay những nhà thờ được chỉ để hành hương và lãnh ơn toàn xá.

Đọc kinh Thánh Phaolô

Học hỏi về con người Thánh Phaolô cũng như giáo huấn của Thánh Phaolô.

II. Ân Xá trong năm Thánh Phaolô

Ngày 10 tháng 5. 2008 qua Văn Phòng của Toà Ân Giải Tối Cao (Offices of Apostolic Penitentiary), Đức Thánh Cha Bênêdictô XVI đã công bố quyết định URBIS ET ORBIS để ban Ân Xá (Indulgence) trong năm mừng sinh nhật 2000 năm của Thánh Phaolô, cho tất cả những tín hữu Công Giáo trên toàn thế giới miễn là họ thoả đáp được ba điều kiện sau đây:

1. Xưng tội (Sacramental Confession – Lãnh nhận bí tích giải tội: đi xưng tội và đã được tha tội)

2. Rước lễ ( Eucharistic Communion – Rước lễ trong Thánh Lễ)

3. Cầu nguyện theo ý Đức Thánh Cha. (Đọc một Kinh lạy Cha, một Kinh Kính Mừng và cầu theo ý Đức Thánh Cha)

Một điều kiện khác để lãnh ơn toàn xá (Plenary Indulgence) là dốc lòng từ bỏ mọi hướng chìu về tội, dù là tội nhẹ.

Vậy lãnh nhận ân xá là việc được tha trước mặt Chúa những hình phạt tạm do tội gây ra. (G.L.điều 992). Ân xá gồm có Tiểu Xá (Partial indulgence) và Toàn Xá (Plenary Indulgence) (GL. 993). Tín hữu được hưởng nhờ ân xá có thể dành cho chính mình hay nhường lại cho những người đã qua đời (GL. 994) Nhưng không thể nhường cho người khác đang còn sống. Ân Xá không tha tội, nhưng chỉ tha những hình phạt tạm do tội gây ra. Muốn hưởng Ân Xá, đương sự phải được Rửa Tội, không bị vạ tuyệt thông và sống trong tình trạng ân sủng tức sạch tội (GL. 996)

Ân Xá được ban cho tín hữu trên toàn thế giới và trong toàn năm mừng sinh nhật Thánh Phaolô, từ ngày 28.6.2008 đến 29.6.2009. Tuy nhiên, mỗi địa phận ấn định thời gian lãnh nhận ân xá riêng thường kéo dài chừng sáu tháng.

Ước gì tất cả chúng ta, những Kitô hữu đang sống ở hải ngoại được lãnh nhận ơn Toàn Xá trong năm Thánh Phaolô nầy. Ước gì những linh mục có trách nhiệm chăm sóc linh hồn giáo dân dành cho giáo dân mình một quan tâm đặc biệt: như giúp họ học hỏi về Thánh Phaolô cũng như những giáo huấn của Ngài. Đồng thời chuẩn bị và giúp cho giáo dân thoả đáp những điếu kiện đòi hỏi để lãnh nhận ơn Toàn Xá.

Không có gì bận cho bằng chăm sóc một giáo xứ. Bận quá, làm quí linh mục mệt, thiếu nghiên cứu thấu đáo và hay “cho qua!” những chuyện mang ích lợi thiêng liêng cho giáo dân, nhưng hơi khác thường như việc lãnh nhận ơn toàn xá. Xin góp ý: Địa phận nào cũng có những chuyên viên đặc trách năm Thánh Phaolô. Họ đang chờ quí Cha mời họ đến giúp giáo xứ.

Vì phải giải thích những thắc mắc có liên quan đến ân xá trong địa phận, tôi đã đọc sách và ghi lại những diều khoản Giáo Luật có liên quan đến Ân Xá, để kèm theo với công bố chính thức của Giám Mục địa phận về lãnh nhận ân xá năm Thánh Phaolô. Xin phổ biến để tuỳ nghi xử dụng:

INDULGENCES

I. Terminology

Indulgence: Remission before God of temporal punishment due to sin (c.992)

Partial indulgence: Remission of part of the temporal punishment due to sin. (c.993)

Plenary indulgence: Remission of all the temporal punishment due to sin. (c. 993)

By way of absolution (per modum absolutionis): Remission of temporal punishment due to sin by an authoritative act of the Church imparted to a person subject to the Church, i.e., a living Christian.

By way of suffrage or prayer (per modum suffragii) Remission of temporal punishment due to sin through the Church’s intercessory prayer for a person not subject to her authority, i.e., a deceased individual.

Eternal punishment: punishment that has no end, lasts forever, that continues without end in the next life for individual who dies in the state of enmity with God.

Guilt: the state resulting from an unforgiven sin

Treasury of the Church: “It is infinite value which can never be exhausted, which Christ’s merits have before God. They were offered so that the whole of humankind could be set free from sin and attain communion with the Father. This treasury includes as well the prayers and good works of the Blessed Virgin Mary … and the prayers and good works of all the saints. It is not the sum total of the material goods which have accumulated over the centuries.” (Paul VI, apostolic constitution, Indulgentiarum doctrina, January 1, 1967 No.5)

II. Definition of indulgences (cc. 992-993)

Can. 992 An indulgence is the remission before God of temporal punishment for sins whose guilt is already forgiven, which a properly disposed member of the Christian faithful gains under certain and defined conditions by the assistance of the Church which as minister of redemption dispenses and applies authoritatively the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints.

1.An indulgence may be gained only for sins for which a person is penitent and has been forgiven

2.An indulgence is a remission before God of a temporal punishment due to sin; not a remission of an ecclesiastical penalty.

3.The individual must be properly disposed; “remission will be in proportion to the charity of the one acting” The individual must fulfill all the conditions required for gaining the indulgence.

4.An indulgence is obtained with the help of the Church acting as the minister of redemption. The Church acting with authority dispenses and applies based on the treasury of the Church.

Can. 993 An indulgence is partial or plenary insofar as it partially or totally frees from the temporal punishment due to sins.

1.Paul VI established a new norm for partial indulgences: A partial indulgence shall be designed by the words “partial indulgence” alone without any indication of days or year being added.

2.The norms state what one must do to gain a plenary indulgence for oneself or to apply it for the deceased per modum suffragii.

3.Fulfillment of three conditions: Sacramental confession; Eucharistic Communion; Prayer for the Pope’s intention. A further requirement is then exclusion of all attachment to sin, even venial sin

4.The three conditions may be carried out several days preceding or following performance of the prescribed work. But it is more fitting that Communion and prayer for the pope’s intention takes place on the day this work is performed.

5.Pope’s intention is satisfied by reciting once Our Father and Hail Mary of his intention

V.Applicability of Indulgence

Can. 994 Any member of the faithful can gain partial or plenary indulgences for oneself or apply them to the dead by way of suffrage.

No one gaining an indulgence may apply it to other living people.

V.Right to grant Indulgences:

Can. 995 §1. In addition to the supreme authority of the Church, only those to whom this power is acknowledged in the law or granted by the Roman Pontiff can bestow indulgences.

§2. No authority below the Roman Pontiff can entrust the power of granting indulgences to others unless the Apostolic See has given this expressly to the person.

The norms on indulgences published by the Apostolic Penitentiary to implement Indulgentiarum doctrina specify which person below the pope have the faculty to grant indulgences. In general, diocesan bishops and those equivalent to them in law can grant partial indulgences to all the Christian faithful within in their territory. Parish priests can impart of the apostolic blessing to those in danger of dead.

The Apostolic pardon for the dying “Through the holy mysteries of our redemption, may almighty God release you from all punishments in this life and in the life to come. May he open to you the gates of paradise and welcome you to everlasting joy. Amen

VI. Capacity to gain indulgences

Can. 996 §1. To be capable of gaining indulgences, a person must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least at the end of the prescribed works.

The basic requirements of person seeking to gain an indulgence:

1.That person must be baptized and follows from the fact that the purpose of an indulgence.

2.That the individual does not deserve eternal punishment due to a mortal sin. A person in the state of mortal sin praying or doing any other indulgence good work does something pleasing to God, but is incapable of gaining an indulgence attached to the work until he/she receives forgiveness for mortal sins.

3. According to common opinion, baptized non-Catholics are incapable of gaining indulgence.

§2. To gain indulgences, however, a capable subject must have at least the general intention of acquiring them and must fulfill the enjoined works in the established time and the proper method, according to the tenor of the grant.

An indulgence is a special gift or grant that is not imposed upon anyone. So the person must have the intention of receiving indulgence. It is sufficient for an individual to make a general intention of receiving all indulgences.
