Reading I (1 Sm 3:3b-10, 19)

A Reading from the First Book of Samuel

Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was. The Lord called to Samuel, who answered, “Here I am.” Samuel ran to Eli and said, “Here I am. You called me.” “I did not call you,” Eli said. “Go back to sleep.” So he went back to sleep. Again the Lord called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I am,” he said. “You called me.” But Eli answered, “I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep.”

At that time Samuel was not familiar with the Lord, because the Lord had not revealed anything to him as yet. The Lord called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am. You called me.” Then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the youth. So he said to Samuel, “Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the Lord came and revealed his presence, calling out as before, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Samuel grew up, and the Lord was with him, not permitting any word of his to be without effect.

Reading II (1 Cor 6:13c-15a, 17-20)

A Reading from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians

Brothers and sisters: The body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body; God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power.

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit with him. Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the immoral person sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.

Gospel (Jn 1:35-42)

The Gospel According to St. John

John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” – which translated means Teacher – “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” – which is translated Christ. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas” – which is translated Peter.

Reflections

Reading I

Samuel was a young boy who grew up in the Temple. His teacher was Eli. God loved Samuel very much. In this story, God calls to Samuel in his sleep. Because Samuel is not used to hearing God’s voice, he runs to Eli, thinking his teacher has called him. When this happens a third time, Eli tells Samuel to answer God by saying, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” For the rest of his life Samuel listened to God. He became a great prophet among his people. God speaks to us in many ways, especially in the sacraments and through God’s word in the Bible. Sometimes God speaks to us in the beauty of nature. Often he speaks to us in the events of our lives. Most of all, God comes to us in the love and in the needs of other people.

Can you hear God’s voice today? How will you answer?

Reading II

The Greek city of Corinth was a bustling seaport that was notorious in ancient times for immorality. The new Christian community there found itself surrounded on all sides by examples of all kinds of sin of body and mind. Paul reminds his readers that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who dwells in us.

There are temptations in our world, just as there were in Corinth. But when we respect our bodies and use them as God teaches us, we are fully alive and free from vices that can make us slaves. Drugs, drunkenness, sexual sins – these have no place in the lives of children of God.

How do you care for your body? How can you respect your body as a temple of the Holy Spirit?

Gospel

The reading tells us about the call of the first disciples. Followers of John the Baptist responded to the gentle invitation of Jesus; they came and stayed the whole day with him. Then these disciples called their friends to join them. One of them was Simon. Jesus told him that he would be called Peter, or Cephas, a Greek word for “rock”. One day the Church would be built on the rock-like faith of Peter.

When Jesus enters our lives with the gentle call of his grace, how will we reply? Will we be busy with other things, afraid he will ask too much of us? Or will we trust him? Will we be open to his call and a new beginning in our lives?

St. Paul The Hermit
Jan. 15th

Paul was born at Lower Thebes, in Egypt. He belonged to an upperclass, Christian family, was well educated and was fluent in Greek and Egyptian.

Paul’s parents showed him by their own lives how to love God and worship him with one’s whole heart. Paul was very sad as both his parents died when he was just fifteen years old.

A few years later, in 250, Emperor Decius started a cruel persecution of the Church. Paul hid in his friend’s house, but he still was not safe. His brother-in-law was after his money and property and could easily betray him.

So Paul ran away to the desert. He found a cave near a palm tree and a spring of fresh water. There he settled. He sewed palm branches together for clothes, and he lived on fruit and water.

Paul had only planned to stay there while the persecution lasted. But by the time it was over, he had fallen in love with the life of prayer. He felt so close to God. How could he give that up?

He decided to stay in the desert and never return to his wealthy city life. Instead, he would spend his life praying daily for the needs of all people and performing penance for sin.

There was another holy hermit at the same time named Anthony. Anthony thought he was the only hermit but God showed Paul to him in a dream and told Anthony to go visit him.

Paul was so happy to see Anthony because he knew he was going to die in a few days. Anthony was sad because he did not want to lose his new friend so soon. But, as Paul had expected, he died on January 15, 342.

Anthony buried him in a cloak that had belonged to St. Athanasius. Then Anthony took home and treasured the garment of palm leaves that Paul had been wearing. He never forgot his wonderful friend. Paul’s biography was written by Saint Jerome.
