The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the Lord and a day of vindication by our God.
I rejoice heartily in the Lord, in my God is the joy of my soul; for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation and wrapped me in a mantle of justice, like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem, like a bride bedecked with her jewels. Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you have to say for yourself?” He said: “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘make straight the way of the Lord,’” as Isaiah the prophet said.” Some Pharisees were also sent. They asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.” This happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Reflections
Reading I
In this reading we are told what the Messiah will do:
· bring good news
· heal the brokenhearted
· set people free
· proclaim God’s love
When Jesus came as the Messiah, he used these words of Isaiah to describe his work. Bethlehem is only the beginning of his work in the world. Jesus wants us to share his work, to be signs of light in our dark and troubled world.
Who do we know that is sad or troubled or caught in a situation they can’t fix? Who is brokenhearted? Who is held captive by fear or doubt or bad habits or addictions? Who doubts God’s love for him or her? How can we help now? How can we prepare ourselves to work for changes?
What does it mean to say “The Spirit of God is upon me”? What does this mean for our work, for what God calls us to do?
Reading II
This reading is taken from what is probably the oldest New Testament book, Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Thessalonians, the people of northern Greece. It was written in the year 50 A.D. and gives us a picture of the concerns of the Christian community twenty years after the ascension of Jesus. The first three sentences state what for Paul are basic traits of the Christian: joy, prayer, and thanksgiving. He prays that when Jesus comes we may be “blameless”, without sin and worthy of our Lord’s coming.
What does St. Paul tell us are the three things that God wills for us “in Christ Jesus”? What does “stifle” mean here? What does it mean to “test everything”?
What are two sentences that tell Paul’s wishes for the Thessalonians? What sentence reassures us that we will be holy?
Gospel
Today’s gospel reading is about the importance of giving witness. The role of John the Baptist was to testify to the light that is Christ. John the Baptist said he was not the Messiah. His baptism and his preaching were to prepare for the Messiah, one far greater than John. It is the coming of the Messiah that the entire world awaits, and we learn about who the Messiah is from all of today’s readings. Waiting requires patience on our part, and becoming prepared for the one who is coming. How are we preparing to celebrate Jesus’ coming this Christmas as the Messiah? What kindness can we give to others this week to show that we are ready?
Pray to the Spirit to know what your work in the world is.
What does John say that he is not? What does John say that he is? Do you think John is clear about what his work is? Why does John baptize? How can we prepare for the one who is coming?

St. Damasus
Dec. 11th
Damasus was born in Rome. He was brought up in a very pious family as his father was a priest in Rome. When Damasus grew up, he served as a deacon in his father’s church. Then he converted, became a Catholic and joined the priesthood.
These were exciting times for the Church. Damasus was a priest who was generous and made many sacrifices for his people. When Pope Liberius died in 366, Damasus became the pope.
He faced many severe difficulties. There was a false pope named Felix. He and his followers ill-treated Damasus. They lied about him, especially about his personal moral life.
The pope had to stand trial before the Roman authorities. He was proved innocent, but he suffered very much because of it. His great friend, St. Jerome, spoke strongly about the goodness of Damasus.
And Jerome had high standards. Pope Damasus realized that the city priest were very rich and living like kings. The country priests were a lot stricter.
Damasus asked the priests to live simple lives and not to collect money and possessions. He set a wonderful example himself.
There were also many false teachings during his time as pope. Damasus explained the true faith. He also called the Second Ecumenical Council which was held in Constantinople. It was during his rule that Christianity officially became the religion of Rome.
Pope Damasus greatly encouraged people to love the Word of God in the scriptures. He asked St. Jerome to translate the Bible into Latin. He also changed the official language of the liturgy from Greek – except for the Kyrie – to Latin.
Pope St. Damasus died at the age of about eighty on December 11, 384. He was buried with his mother and sister in a little chapel he had built.

Reflections
Reading I
In this reading we are told what the Messiah will do:
· bring good news
· heal the brokenhearted
· set people free
· proclaim God’s love
When Jesus came as the Messiah, he used these words of Isaiah to describe his work. Bethlehem is only the beginning of his work in the world. Jesus wants us to share his work, to be signs of light in our dark and troubled world.
Who do we know that is sad or troubled or caught in a situation they can’t fix? Who is brokenhearted? Who is held captive by fear or doubt or bad habits or addictions? Who doubts God’s love for him or her? How can we help now? How can we prepare ourselves to work for changes?
What does it mean to say “The Spirit of God is upon me”? What does this mean for our work, for what God calls us to do?
Reading II
This reading is taken from what is probably the oldest New Testament book, Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Thessalonians, the people of northern Greece. It was written in the year 50 A.D. and gives us a picture of the concerns of the Christian community twenty years after the ascension of Jesus. The first three sentences state what for Paul are basic traits of the Christian: joy, prayer, and thanksgiving. He prays that when Jesus comes we may be “blameless”, without sin and worthy of our Lord’s coming.
What does St. Paul tell us are the three things that God wills for us “in Christ Jesus”? What does “stifle” mean here? What does it mean to “test everything”?
What are two sentences that tell Paul’s wishes for the Thessalonians? What sentence reassures us that we will be holy?
Gospel
Today’s gospel reading is about the importance of giving witness. The role of John the Baptist was to testify to the light that is Christ. John the Baptist said he was not the Messiah. His baptism and his preaching were to prepare for the Messiah, one far greater than John. It is the coming of the Messiah that the entire world awaits, and we learn about who the Messiah is from all of today’s readings. Waiting requires patience on our part, and becoming prepared for the one who is coming. How are we preparing to celebrate Jesus’ coming this Christmas as the Messiah? What kindness can we give to others this week to show that we are ready?
Pray to the Spirit to know what your work in the world is.
What does John say that he is not? What does John say that he is? Do you think John is clear about what his work is? Why does John baptize? How can we prepare for the one who is coming?

St. Damasus
Dec. 11th
Damasus was born in Rome. He was brought up in a very pious family as his father was a priest in Rome. When Damasus grew up, he served as a deacon in his father’s church. Then he converted, became a Catholic and joined the priesthood.
These were exciting times for the Church. Damasus was a priest who was generous and made many sacrifices for his people. When Pope Liberius died in 366, Damasus became the pope.
He faced many severe difficulties. There was a false pope named Felix. He and his followers ill-treated Damasus. They lied about him, especially about his personal moral life.
The pope had to stand trial before the Roman authorities. He was proved innocent, but he suffered very much because of it. His great friend, St. Jerome, spoke strongly about the goodness of Damasus.
And Jerome had high standards. Pope Damasus realized that the city priest were very rich and living like kings. The country priests were a lot stricter.
Damasus asked the priests to live simple lives and not to collect money and possessions. He set a wonderful example himself.
There were also many false teachings during his time as pope. Damasus explained the true faith. He also called the Second Ecumenical Council which was held in Constantinople. It was during his rule that Christianity officially became the religion of Rome.
Pope Damasus greatly encouraged people to love the Word of God in the scriptures. He asked St. Jerome to translate the Bible into Latin. He also changed the official language of the liturgy from Greek – except for the Kyrie – to Latin.
Pope St. Damasus died at the age of about eighty on December 11, 384. He was buried with his mother and sister in a little chapel he had built.
