A great King am I, says the LORD of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations. And now, O priests, this commandment is for you: If you do not listen, if you do not lay it to heart, to give glory to my name, says the LORD of hosts, I will send a curse upon you and of your blessing I will make a curse. You have turned aside from the way, and have caused many to falter by your instruction; you have made void the covenant of Levi, says the LORD of hosts. I, therefore, have made you contemptible and base before all the people, since you do not keep my ways, but show partiality in your decisions. Have we not all the one father? Has not the one God created us? Why then do we break faith with one another, violating the covenant of our fathers?

Như người vú nuôi nâng niu con cái mình thế nào, thì chúng tôi yêu thương anh em đến nỗi chúng tôi rất vui lòng trao phó cho anh em không những Tin Mừng của Thiên Chúa, mà còn cả mạng sống chúng tôi nữa: vì anh em đã nên thiết nghĩa với chúng tôi. Reflections
Reading I
Malachi reminds us how easy it is to forget God’s blessings and to turn aside from God’s ways. In our first reading the prophet is addressing some of the evils of his day. He says that the people are not serious about giving God glory because their leaders are misguiding them. They have broken the covenant with God and have broken faith with one another. The prophet calls for repentance.
Malachi repeats the phrase “lay it to heart” twice in today’s reading. What does that mean? How can we take the word of God to heart in our prayer and actions? The reading refers to giving glory to God’s name. What prayers do you know which give glory to God’s name? The reading also refers to “turning aside from the way”. What does that mean? What word does Malachi use three times to indicate God’s displeasure? What does it mean to break faith with each other?
Reading II
Although Paul was a brilliant apostle, he did not try to influence people by throwing his weight around. He guided the Christian communities with gentleness and fatherly love. He showed his respect for them because he recognized that the word of God was at work within them.
What else beside the word of God did Paul want to share with the Thessalonians? Why? What does it mean when Paul says that the word of God is at work within those who believe? Have you ever met anyone in whom the word of God seemed to be at work? What would help us to become persons and a people in whom the word of God is at work?
Gospel
Today’s gospel reminds us that the good example of one person can have far reaching effects. The advice Jesus gives is that our lives – not just our words – should bring the good news to others. In other words, we should practice what we preach. When we fail to do this, we rob our beliefs of their power to affect others. Think of the early Christian martyrs whose example of faith led others to Christ.
What does it mean when Jesus says about the religious leaders of his day “their words are bold but their deeds are few”? Recall people in your own life who have brought you closer to God. What does Jesus say about service? About humility? How will you act so that your life can be a message of faith to everyone you meet?

St. Alphonsus Rodriguez

Tragedy and challenge beset today’s saint early in life, but Alphonsus Rodriguez found happiness and contentment through simple service and prayer.
Born in Spain in 1533, Alphonsus inherited the family textile business at 23. Within the space of three years, his wife, daughter and mother died; meanwhile, business was poor. Alphonsus stepped back and reassessed his life. He sold the business and, with his young son, moved into his sisters’ home. There he learned the discipline of prayer and meditation.
Years later, at the death of his son, Alphonsus, almost 40 by then, sought to join the Jesuits. He was not helped by his poor education. He applied twice before being admitted. For 45 years he served as doorkeeper at the Jesuits’ college in Majorca. When not at his post, he was almost always at prayer, though he often encountered difficulties and temptations.
His holiness and prayerfulness attracted many to him, including St. Peter Claver, then a Jesuit seminarian. Alphonsus’s life as doorkeeper may have been humdrum, but he caught the attention of poet and fellow-Jesuit Gerard Manley Hopkins, who made him the subject of one of his poems.
Alphonsus died in 1617. He is the patron saint of Majorca.

Reflections
Reading I
Malachi reminds us how easy it is to forget God’s blessings and to turn aside from God’s ways. In our first reading the prophet is addressing some of the evils of his day. He says that the people are not serious about giving God glory because their leaders are misguiding them. They have broken the covenant with God and have broken faith with one another. The prophet calls for repentance.
Malachi repeats the phrase “lay it to heart” twice in today’s reading. What does that mean? How can we take the word of God to heart in our prayer and actions? The reading refers to giving glory to God’s name. What prayers do you know which give glory to God’s name? The reading also refers to “turning aside from the way”. What does that mean? What word does Malachi use three times to indicate God’s displeasure? What does it mean to break faith with each other?
Reading II
Although Paul was a brilliant apostle, he did not try to influence people by throwing his weight around. He guided the Christian communities with gentleness and fatherly love. He showed his respect for them because he recognized that the word of God was at work within them.
What else beside the word of God did Paul want to share with the Thessalonians? Why? What does it mean when Paul says that the word of God is at work within those who believe? Have you ever met anyone in whom the word of God seemed to be at work? What would help us to become persons and a people in whom the word of God is at work?
Gospel
Today’s gospel reminds us that the good example of one person can have far reaching effects. The advice Jesus gives is that our lives – not just our words – should bring the good news to others. In other words, we should practice what we preach. When we fail to do this, we rob our beliefs of their power to affect others. Think of the early Christian martyrs whose example of faith led others to Christ.
What does it mean when Jesus says about the religious leaders of his day “their words are bold but their deeds are few”? Recall people in your own life who have brought you closer to God. What does Jesus say about service? About humility? How will you act so that your life can be a message of faith to everyone you meet?

St. Alphonsus Rodriguez

Tragedy and challenge beset today’s saint early in life, but Alphonsus Rodriguez found happiness and contentment through simple service and prayer.
Born in Spain in 1533, Alphonsus inherited the family textile business at 23. Within the space of three years, his wife, daughter and mother died; meanwhile, business was poor. Alphonsus stepped back and reassessed his life. He sold the business and, with his young son, moved into his sisters’ home. There he learned the discipline of prayer and meditation.
Years later, at the death of his son, Alphonsus, almost 40 by then, sought to join the Jesuits. He was not helped by his poor education. He applied twice before being admitted. For 45 years he served as doorkeeper at the Jesuits’ college in Majorca. When not at his post, he was almost always at prayer, though he often encountered difficulties and temptations.
His holiness and prayerfulness attracted many to him, including St. Peter Claver, then a Jesuit seminarian. Alphonsus’s life as doorkeeper may have been humdrum, but he caught the attention of poet and fellow-Jesuit Gerard Manley Hopkins, who made him the subject of one of his poems.
Alphonsus died in 1617. He is the patron saint of Majorca.
