CHÚA NHẬT 2 MÙA CHAY SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

Mc 9, 1-9

Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.

Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified.

Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.

Questions for reflection

1. What can blind us or keep us from recogni____ God’s glory in our lives?

2. Are you prepared to see God’s glory?

3. What is the significance of this mysterious appearance?

4. How much do we miss of God’s glory and action because we are asleep spiritually?

5. Are you spiritually awake?

6. Do you seek his presence with faith and reverence?

Today’s readings are filled with paradox and irony. Abraham’s son was spared; God’s Son went to the cross. Abraham brought blessing to the world through his descendant Jesus. But to bring true blessing, the descendant of Abraham died for us. Abraham loved his son dearly; God loved us so much that he even gave his only Son. The Jews expected a glorious Messiah. But God showed the glory of the Transfiguration in order to prepare his people for a suffering Messiah. Only once during his entire life did Jesus allow his divinity to shine through his humanity. The purpose was to strengthen his followers for the cross. But it didn’t work. Not even the glory of his Transfiguration and the witness of Moses and Elijah could change the minds of Peter, James and John. At all times, Jesus is the divine Son of God; yet he “looked like it” only once. After our baptism, at all times we are truly the children of God, temples of the Spirit, heirs of heaven, members of the living Body of Christ, and sharers of the very life of God. We may not look like it, but we are called to live like it! The Lenten season challenges us to live according to our dignity. Separate yourself from all things of this world which are opposed to the kingdom of God in your life. Then we shall truly share in his glory.
